The study of what human beings are related to my life. For me at the pastoral, understanding of man is the foundation for understanding God. Because the Bible reports God's love for man, and conveying it is the center of the pastoral society. Therefore it is very important for me to understand the human beings at the center of God's love.
Therefore, this study aims to understand human beings in the Old Testament. To this end, in chapter 1, I examined the existential and functional meanings of humans created as the ‘Image and likeness of God’ through the research of the four words ‘צלם‘, ’דמות‘, ’רדה ‘ and ‘כבש ,‘which appeared in Genesis 1:26-28.
In chapter 2, I identified similarities and differences between the two texts by comparing and studying the human creation paragraphs among the creation myths of the ancient Near East. Obviously the Bible shares mythical images of creation with the ancient Near East, and thus cannot completely deny its association with them. This is especially true in that humans are created by the word of God and through the divine element. However, human creation in the ancient Near East was created "in a Image of God," not "as a Image of God" or "as a likeness of God.“
In Chapter 3, based on the comparison of human understanding in these Ancient Modern literature, in addition to Genesis 1:26-28, we looked at human beings shown in Genesis 2:4b-3:24, Psalms 8 in terms of existential and functional aspects of that.
The study, in terms of existential aspect, shows the "dignity" of the human being itself in the Old Testament. The "dignity" is the result of the divine nature of God, which is an infinite and sacred attribute of God, given to man. In terms of functional aspect, the human beings of the Old Testament has a special function of associating with God and other creatures. Thus, understanding of the human beings in the Old Testament shows the dignity of man as the Image and Likeness of God, and the functional man who subdues and rules.
