A Study of Paul's Understanding of ‘Apostleship’ Revealed in the Second Epistle to the Corinthians원문보기

This thesis has the same viewpoint as the opinion that 2 Corinthians is a single epistle unified rhetorically and literarily, and that the consistent theme in this epistle is ‘apostleship.’ I pay attention to the uniqueness of Paul's recognition and statement of the apostleship as reflected in 2 Corinthians. They can be summarized as follows. First, Paul demonstrates what the apostleship is from the eschatological, redemptive-historical viewpoint under the fundamental concept of Christinity, the “covenant and Christ.” Second, on the basis of Paul’s argument the diachronic biblio-theological system, which he has established through his experience on the way to Damascus, settles down. Third, Paul explains his apostleship by his self-conscious term of ἀπόστολος and by the concept of his church-ministerial term of διάκονος/διακονία. Accordingly, the main purpose of this thesis is to study about Paul’s unique mentions of the apostleship and his recognition of the apostolic position and ministry which is based on his biblico-theological understanding of it. The scope of this study is limited to the texts which reflect Paul’s understanding about the apostleship, including the directly connected texts with it. The methodology of this study naturally includes the method of the intratextual interpretation, the investigation of the main theological terms and ideas in the given texts, the synchronic-diachronic observation of the main text, and various dogmatic insights(eschatological, soteriological, Christological and ecclesiological). In Chapter II, I concentrates on the origin and usages of the terms ἀπόστολος(apostle) and διάκονος/διακονία(worker/duty) in relation to the apostleship and in Chapter III, I consider the problem of unity of 2 Corinthians, the structure of this epistle, the Sitz im Leben of the Corinthian Church, scholars’ opinions about the Paul’s opponents, their challenges and his reactions against them, and the argument of his apostleship on the basis of his experience on the way to Damascus(3:7-18; 4:6; 5:11-21). Chapters IV, V, VI concentrate on the fact that Paul as an apostle defines himself as “a worker of the new covenant” and “a worker of Christ”, and then argues that he himself is “a true worker” by making use of the metaphoric expression, “a matchmaker”. He grants the notion of the covenantal accomplishment to his apostleship from the eschatological, redemptive-historical viewpoint. In the final conclusion of Chapter VII, I try to arrange Paul’s biblico-theological understanding concerning the recognition of his own apostleship and apostolic ministry which has been drawn from the previous chapters and reflected throughout 2 Corinthians. In addition, from the practical viewpoint, with serious apprehensiveness in relation to the facts that today ministers of the church may forget the basic comprehension of the nature of pastorate, may set the direction of their ministry depending on their individual faith-view or experiences, may express their biased concerns focused only on the practical management system of the church, or may participate in the movements of the distorted unbiblical theology/ministry such as the Neo-apostle Movement, I would like to present a biblico-theological solution on the basis of the study in the previous chapters. Especially, I believe that Paul’s recognition of apostleship and apostolic ministry shown in 2 Corinthians would enlighten the present ministers to become a true pastor as a church-centric servant of God, i.e. the leader of the covenantal community, would stimulate the saints of contemporary church to perceive the necessity of the holistic understanding of the Old Testament and the New Testament in which the history of the covenant and the history of redemption might be the fundamental frame, and simultaneously, would supply a spiritual energy for them to establish the eschatological faith-view.
