This study aims to find various mathematical theories applied to music and show how they relate to the music composition. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to the research and development of music analysis by identifying areas where mathematical theories are practically applied and pioneering new areas of mathematical analysis methods while analyzing music by applying these theories. The correlation between music and mathematics has been studied by many scholars. Starting with understanding the relationship between the length of string and pitch by Pythagoras, the study was advanced from the connection between frequency and interval to the calculation of pure temperament and equal temperament, and the relationship of pure temperament and harmonics. Also, many other mathematicians, such as Euclid, Galilei, Newton and Euler, had an influence on the development of music. Many composition skills, which have been used from ancient times to nowadays, are based on mathematics, for example, Golden Section, Fibonacci Sequence, The Axis System, harmonics using constant ratio, Lucas Sequence, Set Theory, Stochastics and so on. It’s unclear whether it was intended, but we can find the application of these theories on quite a few composers’ music like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Palestrina, Bartók. In this study, I will summarize and prove these theories and demonstrate how they relate to music composition. I’d like to expand the mathematical domain of music analysis by researching and matching the music of and《Mikrokosmos》by Bartók, which expectedly used these composition skills and mathematics theories. In this paper, I intend to focus on research with the aspect of mathematical rules, excluding the common analysis methods.
