The purpose of this study is to investigate influence of intimacy on academic achievement, peer assessment and peer relationship when forming groups based on learners' intimacy in the cooperative learning of English reading with middle school students. This study was carried out for 2 weeks targeting 53 students in 2nd and 3rd grade in H middle school located in Chungcheongnam-do. 5 or 6 students were assigned to each group to be equal in their academic standard through pre-test. For the reading activity, Jigsaw revised was used and group reward allowed to cooperate in entire learning process. After the cooperative learning, the peer assessment was conducted to evaluate score of group members. Statistical analysis was conducted using reading test, peer relationship survey and peer assessment questionnaire and also, the class-observation journals and recordings were used to complement quantitative research. The results of the study are as follows. First, the both 2nd and 3rd grade how intimacy group showed learner’s reading evaluation score increased significantly after learning. On the contrary, the low intimacy group in 3rd grade showed that reading score did not increase significantly, which indicated that intimacy can positively influence reading ability. However, as the reading score of the low intimacy group in 2nd grade increased their reading score, the cooperative learning itself did positively influence the reading ability. Second, the result of peer assessment after the cooperative learning to see how the intimacy within the group affect the peer assessment showed that score gap between high and low intimacy group was statistically significant. It implied that learners gave score generously for members they felt more familiar. Since there was no significant corelation between the peer assessment score and reading score, a reliability of peer assessment was not proved but it could not rule out possibility that it induces learners to have active participation and attitude in the learning process and positively influence. Third, the analysis of changes in the peer relationship before and after the learning in the both groups with high and low intimacy showed that the high intimacy group has the peer relationship score which is statistically significantly increased. However, the decrease in the peer relationship score of the low intimacy group indicated that if the members who are familiar with can improve the peer relationship and if the intimacy was low, the interaction did not go well in the learning process ending up with a lack of communication, resulting in the decreased peer relationship. When it came to preference for intimacy-based cooperative learning, 2nd graders recognized they like learning with close friends because post-score increased in both groups with high and low intimacy. But the 3rd graders seemed to be lenient in forming the groups because there was no difference in score before and after the learning. Lastly, the analysis of observing conversation between learners within the group showed that the high-level learners helped low-level learners in the high intimacy group, coming up with scaffolding that results in high frequency in interaction and positive atmosphere but they were likely to chat a lot. The members of the low intimacy group had poor communication with some argument occasionally and their conversation focused on learning contents more than the high intimacy group. A series of observation indicated that learners’ intimacy influenced the atmosphere of group. To sum up, the learners' intimacy has significant difference in academic achievement, peer assessment and peer relationship. Given that there’s difference in the results in 2nd and 3rd graders, it’s probably caused by difference in online and offline class. Conversation between 2nd grade learners and peer assessment, peer relationship questionnaires implies that the results of the study indicates that intimacy influenced the cooperative learning. Therefore, the intimacy between members can’t be ruled out for the cooperative learning and it’s very important factor to be considered with other ways to organize. It’s expected to see positive changes in learning effect and affective variables. The future study needs to consider other teaching methods not unified in this study and adopt peer assessment and other assessment in order to verify reliability. Furthermore, it’s required to study other variables including gender of member within the group, personality and interest to provide various ways of cooperative learning.
