As the scale of the health functional food market is increasing, health functional food companies are developing and marketing their own brands or brands, and competition among health functional food brands is becoming fierce. In the past, the brand strategy approached customers with an economic image, but recently, various images have been developed to meet various needs of customers. Therefore, this study classified brand image into affective image, symbolic image, utilitarian image, economic image, and social responsibility image. In particular, it is predicted that cognitive trust will be formed at the beginning of purchase, and affective trust will be formed since the health functional food cannot be evaluated without consumer purchasing or consuming experience. Measuring trust as cognitive and affective trust can provide strategic implications for managing brand trust over time. Trust is an important marketing tool for understanding the brand with consumer relationship. In particular, trust with functional foods such as health functional foods is divided into cognitive and affective trust. Therefore, the results of this study, which show that trust is formed by brand image, can provide strategic guideline for brand image management to increase customer loyalty. In addition, if the consumer trusts the brand, since the consumer relies on the brand to continuously receive the brand's resources, trust is an important factor in increasing brand attachment. According to the attachment theory, attachment is described as a dependence on the brand. Thus, trust-attachment-loyalty framework helps to understand consumer behavior process that increases trust (cognitive and affective) formed by the experience of consumption of health functional foods influence attachment, and in turn increase repurchase and recommendation intention. From this perspective, this research developed the framework of image-trust-attachment-loyalty and examined the structural relationships between them using symbolic convergent theory(SCT) and clue utilization theory(CUT), and stimulus-organism-response(S-O-R) model. In order to test research hypothesis, the survey was conducted for adults over 20 years of age who purchased functional food within the last year from March 13 to March 26, 2020. The data were collected from panels of online survey company. The questionaire was distributed to a total of 2,150 panels and 512 panels responded. Among the collected questionnaires, 510 respondents (99.0%) were used for analysis, excluding 2 copies that responded unfaithfully. SPSS 21.0 and Smart PLS 3.0 were used for the analysis. The results are as follows. First, symbolic, utilitarian, economic, and social responsibility image were found to have a significantly positive effect on cognitive trust, but affective image did not. Second, affective image, economic image, and social responsibility image have significantly positive effects on affective trust, but symbolic and utilitarian image did not. Third, both cognitive and affective trust had significantly positive effects on attachment. Fourth, cognitive trust has significantly positive effect on loyalty, but affective trust did not. Fifth, attachment has significantly positive effect on loyalty. Theoretical implications of this study are as follow. First, First, this study confirmed what is brand image factor using SCT and CUT. Second, brand image is generally composed of affective, symbolic, utilitarian, and economic image, but in this study, CSR was added as an image factor. The attempt of this study shows that CSR image plays an important role in building trust. Third, this study showed that the corporate image can be a stimulating factor affecting consumer evaluation and behavior using the S-O-R theory, thereby extending the scope of application of the S-O-R theory. Fourth, this study identifed the relative effect of cognitive and affective trust on attachment using attachment theory. The practical implications are as follows: First, health functional food brands need to increase their brand experience to build a positive brand image for their customers. Therefore, health functional food brands should provide continuous experiences to help customers form positive images. Second, health functional food brands need to strengthen their interaction with customers. As a health functional food brand can be a corporate resource, it is necessary for brand managers to establish a positive brand image through interaction with customers. Third, health functional food brand companies need to utilize CSR activities in their brand image positioning strategy. The reason is that the CSR activities of health functional food brand companies make the brand to be considered as a trusted brand by customers. Fourth, health functional food brand companies need to strengthen their cognitive trust. Therefore, it is desirable for health functional food marketer to form a cognitive trust of customer by using a person who can guarantee the function as an advertising model rather than an advertisement using an entertainer.
