Since the mid and late twentieth century, the magnitude and frequency of severe weather events tend to increase by climate change, affecting a severe impact on human and natural systems. The situation is expected to worsen in the future. This study reveals the physical mechanism of changes in the atmospheric circulation over the tropics and midlatitudes in the future and investigates the potential impact of the change on the midlatitudes climate. The changes in the Hadley circulation (HC) and Mediterranean atmospheric circulation are analyzed by using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) climate simulations and model experiments. The HC plays an important role in redistributing energy in the Earth’s climate system as the thermally direct meridional circulation. The center of the HC is expected to weaken and both edges of the HC are anticipated to strengthen in the future. Therefore, this study examines the physical process of atmospheric circulation changes in each region in the future. A subset of CMIP5 models shows that the increase in latent heating in 5° S–5° N causes the strengthened ascending motion there. Meanwhile, the opposite result is seen in 5°–10° N. The descending motion change in the extratropical region comes from the increase in static stability. The increased surface temperature over the tropics and subtropics induces a more stable troposphere through the quasi-moist adiabatic adjustment; then, the subsidence weakens in 15°–30° N. The descending motion in 30°–45° N strengthens due to the atmospheric stabilization from the subtropical warming. The enhanced subsidence shifts poleward, which is consistent with the change in subtropical jet stream, hydrology, sea level pressure. This effect on the midlatitude climate is apparent over the ocean and coastal regions rather than land. The Mediterranean summer climate is known to be influenced by the South Asia summer monsoon (SASM) via the monsoon–desert teleconnection. In the future, precipitation is anticipated to increase over not only the SASM region but also the East Asia summer monsoon (EASM) and tropical Atlantic areas. Therefore, this study examines the effect of remote forcing regions on the Mediterranean climate in the future. The subsidence over the Western Mediterranean (WM) will become stronger in the future simulations. The strengthened descending motion comes from the SASM, EASM, and Atlantic heatings: the SASM and EASM forcing causes the westward expansion of upper-level anticyclonic circulation, and the Atlantic heating induces the northeastward propagation of wave energy. The change in sea surface temperature over the WM is in agreement with the descending motion change both in the future and current climate. Along with the sea surface temperature warming in recent decades, the chlorophyll-a concentration and fisheries production have declined over the WM. Therefore, the comprehensive understanding of the atmospheric circulation changes provides better insight into the marine system and weather/climate of the coastal areas in the midlatitudes.
