Feng Shui ideas of pragmatic (silhak) scholars in the late Joseon dynasty : focused on Yi Ik, Yi Jung-hwan, and Jeong Yak-yong원문보기

The idea of Feng Shui Geography(風水地理 思想) in Korea was established in the ancient times, and it has been passed down based on Buddhism in the Goryeo(高麗) Dynasty and Confucianism in the Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty. In modern times, it has been transformed into the background of Western scientific civilization and thought. In the process of transformation, in the late Joseon Dynasty, when Western civilization began to flow into the Korean Peninsula, the late Joseon Silhak scholars(朝鮮後期 實學者) who led the transformation in all aspects of politics, economy, society, and culture tried to graft Western scientific thoughts into our traditional thoughts of Feng Shui Geography. As a result, the purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of how Feng Shui geography has been transformed and to find implications for modern Feng Shui research and utilization suggested by these Silhak scholars. Generally, the origin of Korean feng shui is known to originate from Do-seon(道詵)(827-898) of the end of Silla(新羅), and the general flow of Korean feng shui is Goryeo's regional feng shui theory(國域風水論) starting from Do-seon and feng shui theory to determine the capital city in the end of Goryeo and early of Joseon(麗末·鮮初), and It has been passed down to Cemetery fengshui theory(陰宅風水論) in the Joseon Dynasty and the practical fengshui theory(實學的 風水論) of the late Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮後期). In the Goryeo Dynasty, the entire land was interpreted in Feng Shui geographically, and by living in humanities according to it, jiin-sanggwanlon(地人相關論), the theory that land and the personality are closely related, was practiced in depth, most of them were predominantly in power discourse to seize political leadership related to the Cheondo(遷都), moving the capital, debate in the end of Goryeo and early of Joseon. It was developed mainly on the theory of Cemetery feng shui in Joseon Dynasty and the Practical Feng Shui theory was established with the efforts of the Silhak scholars(實學者) to solve the social side effects of widespread of Cemetery Feng Shui in the late Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮後期). In the Joseon Dynasty, Cemetery Feng Shui became popular in Joseon, which used the doctrines of Chu-tzũ(性理學) as national policy, and a different burial culture was promoted from the Buddhist cremation method that was popular in the Goryeo period. and Confucian funeral culture centered on chéngzi(程子) and Chu-tzũ(朱子) and Feng Shui geographic thought were based on yin and yang five elements(陰陽五行) and Identical-Qi sympathy theory(同氣感應論), but thoroughly criticized the tricky prescription of chugil-pihyung(追吉避凶), seeking good things and avoiding bad thing. However, in order to achieve the goal of personal success and prosperity of families, a tricky prescriptions were increasingly attracting attention, and in the late Joseon Dynasty, the belief in Feng Shui geography was excessive. As a result, A number of social problems, such as sansong(山訟), Cemetery-related litigation, have arisen due to the prevalence of customs that desires of seeking blessing while ignoring Confucian values. However, since the 16th century, the Chu-tzũ school of Neo- Confucianism(朱子學) which Joseon accepted as a new idea and the idea of establishing a country, has been declining in its functionality to adapt to changes in reality by reflecting on ideological authority. As a reflection on this, Silhak school(實學派) emerged as a position to escape from the authority and obstructive of traditionalism and to absorb new knowledge and seek objective consciousness. Late Joseon Dynasty Silhak is generally referred to as the term geungi-silhag(近畿實學), which seems to focus on a series of political, academic, and kinship groups centered on the line of geungi-namin(近畿南人), especially Sungho(星湖), rather than the area called geungi(近畿), namely close to Seoul. These silhag scholars criticized existing feng shui, such as Cemetery feng shui, and suggested acceptable feng shui. When they looked at the attitude toward feng shui, Yi Ik(李瀷) showed the attitude of studying feng shui geography as a field of study, Yi Jung-hwan(李重煥), who wrote ‘taegliji’(擇里志), tried to keep a certain distance from Feng Shui by neglecting Cemetery Feng Shui and explaining the situation in the region while changing Feng Shui into everyday language or pretending to be the word of Feng Shui. Jeong Yak-yong(丁若鏞) viewed Cemetery Feng Shui as the object of reform and showed a critical attitude. The characteristics of Feng Shui ideology by the silhag scholars demonstrated in this study are as follows.
First, it critically accepted Cemetery Feng Shui. In particular, while criticizing the theory of Identical-Qi sympathy theory(同氣感應論) centered on Balbog(發福), fortune, which is the basis of Cemetery Feng Shui, the Confucian Identical-Qi sympathy theory(儒敎的 同氣感應論) related to ‘Hyo(孝)’, Filial piety, were accepted. Second, it actively embraced the theory of the Seongse(形勢論). The silhag scholars shared the perception of Baekdu-daegan(白頭大幹) and main(top) Mountain, and they analyze the Heongse(形勢), Circumstances of mountain and water, in various regions of the Korean Peninsula using the method of Jangpoong(藏風), Gathering wind, and Duksu(得水), Getting water, of the Heongse theory(形勢論) and characterize the origins of the people according to the theory of ingeol-jilyeong(人傑地靈說). Third, the hyeong-guglon(形局論) was actively used. silhag scholars(實學者) used it to analyze the situation. Yi Ik described as Yeongnam(嶺南) region as a Yangryuji(楊柳枝), and the area around Gyeryongsan(鷄龍山) is described as ‘gong’ja-hyeonggug(‘公’字形局), while Honam(湖南) region is described as sanbalsaha(散髮四下). Yi Jung-hwan, referring to the words of Feng Shui experts(堪輿家), discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula, described Baekaksan(白岳山) as a wooden figure, Taebaeksan(太白山) as a water flowing figure, and Wolchulsan(月出山) as a fire figure Songaksan(松岳山) as a flat figure. Jeong Yak-yong described the situation of Yeongnam(嶺南) as a pogjugeunhoehyeong(輻輳筋會形) Fourth, feng shui was valued as a condition of residence selection. Yi Jung-hwan placed feng shui, economy, and humanity and landscape as the conditions of residence, and emphasized feng shui while discussing the economic activity, village customs, and surrounding scenery. Yi Ik discussed economy, morale, and customs as a condition of residence. Jeong Yak-yong also mentioned feng shui good place as a condition of Where yuin(幽人), a person who lives outside the world, live. and prioritized economic aspects, including water and fuel and food, village customs and beautiful mountain and stream as a condition of residence, but did not exclude feng shui. Fifth, the silhag scholars showed a critical attitude with interest toward igilon(理氣論). The silhag scholars seemed to have a wealth of interest and knowledge about igilon(理氣論), and Yi Ik seems to have studied at an academic level, and Yi Jung-hwan was reluctant to mention the iginon(理氣論), and especially Jeong Yak-yong had a negative view on the tactical content. The feng shui idea of these silhag scholars suggests that the study of feng shui and the application of feng shui should be developed around Yangtaek·Yanggi feng shui(陽宅·陽基 風水), Feng Shui for home and city location, and the Heongse theory. It can be interpreted that it is necessary to develop and apply ecologically oriented feng shui theory combined with environmental theory and tourism resources and modernization through cultural contents of feng shui according to the ideology of silhag.
