Purpose: This study is a methodological attempt to develop a protocol to prevent medical device-related pressure injuries(MDRPI) of patients in intensive care units(ICU). Methods: The protocol was developed based on 4 stages of the clinical practice guideline development by Thomas (1999). Related literature and medical records were analyzed to develop a preliminary protocol in Stage 1, and the formation of the preliminary protocol in Stage 2 was carried out through interviews with 3 nurses. Validation of the preliminary protocol by experts was performed 3 times in Stage 3. A panel of 11 experts was formed in the first and second validation, and 5 experts in the third validation. Verification of the revised protocol’s in Stage 4 was performed from January 1 to March 6, 2020 on ICU nurses and patients at P University Hospital located in Y city. Verification of relevance to practice performed on 109 nurses was done using the evaluation form for nurses. Verification of relevance to practice performed on 636 patients was done using the evaluation form for patients, confirming the MDRPI incidence, incidence of pressure injuries by type of medical device, sites of pressure injuries, stage of pressure injuries, and size of pressure injuries. There was a revise or supplement in the results of verification, and the final protocol was confirmed in Stage 5. Results: Before applying the protocol, the MDRPI incidence was 1.5%(28 cases). As for the stage of MDRPI, 57.2%(16 cases) was deep tissue injury. 42.9%(12 cases) was intermittent pneumatic compression(IPC) devices, and the most common site was leg with 46.7%(13 cases). Applying the protocol, the MDRPI incidence was 1.2%(22 cases), and 45.5%(10 cases) was deep tissue injury. 45.5%(10 cases) was IPC devices, and the most common site was leg with 50%(11 cases). Compared to before applying the protocol, the MDRPI group decreased significantly after applying the protocol(=66.06, p<.001). Conclusion: Using a protocol to prevent MDRPI for ICU patients can be a safe intervention as it reduces incidence of pressure injuries.
