The primary purpose of this study is to translate Han Kang’s novel The Boy Is Coming into Chinese. In recent years, there has been an increase in two-way translations and translation theory in Chinese and Korean studies. Among these studies, novel translation has many advantages. Since the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and China in 1992, there has a dramatic increase in curiosity as a significant number of modern Chinese literature has been translated into Korean. The preference and demand for translations of Korean literary texts in China, however, increased significantly in tandem with the popularity of the Korean wave during the past two decades. Despite such interest, translation is an arduous task, similar to the creation of a new literary work, where problems of unevenness in texts occur depending on the quality of the translator.
Traditional approaches in translation in applied linguistics is regarded as ancillary and a reciprocal transition between two languages. This approach, however, has neglected the problems of addressing the in-depth culture hidden inside language. According to recent studies, translation involves a comprehensive and holistic delivery of a text written, which consists of converting words for a target audience for a given period, mindful of the cultural and historical background.
Because texts contain so many cultural elements, it is essential to understand the context people produced during that era. Only then can it be considered a successful translation when target readers from different cultural backgrounds can sympathize with the context familiar to native speakers. The Boy Is Coming is the sixth feature novel by novelist and poet Han Kang. Hang narrates the story of the Gwangju Democratization Movement and the people who disappeared since May 18, 1980. In particular, the novel offers a time-honored background of the 1980s which combines local color with a space-based knowledge of the city of Gwangju in South Jeolla Province In addition to the various cultural elements, scattered throughout the text, its distinctiveness includes calm and heartfelt sentences that convey the words of countless innocent souls killed during this period, while offering exhaustive depictions of suffering and misery of those left behind.
The main task of this translation research is critically engaging with the issues mentioned above stated to convey Han Kang’s novels to target readers. At the same time, the end goal is to identify different translation approaches suitable for describing certain cultural elements in the original story. Achieving quality translation requires a combination of historical understanding, empathy, and cultural knowledge of the original text to convey to the readers of the arrival language.
