A Study on the Effect of the Ceramic Policy of the Government-General of Joseon in the First Half of the 20th Century on the Ceramics at the Joseon Art Exhibition원문보기

This study examined how the ceramics policy of the Government-General of Joseon in the first half of the 20th century influenced the ceramics in the Craft section of the Joseon Art Exibiton through the aspects of the exhibiting ceramic artworks and the craftsmen of the Craft section of the Joseon Art Exibition, and the ceramic policy appeared in the exhibiting ceramics. The ceramic artists submitting to the Ministry of Craft can be divided mainly into Japanese private capital manufacturers and the chief commissioners on the local kiln(지방요) improvement project, the artists related to the participation system of the judges, and former Joseon branch-affiliated potters. All of them are related to the ceramics policy of the Government-General of Joseon, which has been in place since the 1910s. First, in the 1910s, the Government-General of Joseon established the ceramic industry station of the central laboratory of industry and made it a policy concentrating on technology improvements and ceramic production. Notably, the Government-General of Joseon has produced Goryeo celadons(高麗靑磁) as the center since the beginning of the 20th century. A surge in demand for Goryeo celadon was attributable to devoting phenomenon of the Goryeo celadon shaped from the end of the 19th century. Accordingly, the Government-General of Joseon tried to produce a Korean celadon reproduction, which is close to imitation, and encouraged the Japanese migration policy, conducted various technical tests with the Japanese private capital manufacturer and the Japanese ceramic artisans to reproduce the Korean celadon. These include Samwha Goryeoso(三和高麗燒) of Tomita Kisaku and Yoshida Yoshidake, who continued to produce Goryeo celadon until the mid-and late-20th century. It has been confirmed that the ceramics manufacturing technology used in the Goryeo celadon production was applied in the ceramics submitted the Tomita ceramic manufacturing plant submitted by the Craft section of the Joseon Art Exhibition and Yoshida Yoshidake, the Japanese ceramic producer. As the foundation of central production has been formed, the Government-General of Joseon decided to select a local base and implement a local kiln improvement project from 1926. The representative local bases were Yeoju(驪州), Pyongyang(平壤), Hoeryong(會寧) in Hambuk(咸北), Daejeon(大田) in Chungnam(忠南), and Gochang(高敞) in Jeonbuk(全北), which are also confirmed to be exhibited at the Craft section of the Joseon Art Exhibition. The artworks from local kilns have been found to have the phenomenon of ceramics that reflect the region's characteristics, such as the Hoeryeong pottery(會寧陶磁) affected by Jun Kiln, and confirmed the features of the regional production. In particular, they appeared at various industrial fairs and department stores, which have been in place since late 1920, and they seem to have received support in cooperation with the Government-General of Joseon's policy on promoting industrial ceramics. The exhibition of the former Joseon branch-affiliated potter is also confirmed. Lee Yoon-kyu seems to have opened a private workshop in Buan(扶安), Jeonbuk, and Jang Gyu-hwan had worked on a private pottery production in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, and served as chief of the company when the Yeoju joint workshop was established in 1932. Unlike the artists from the Japanese ceramics manufacturer, they only exhibited once and won. In the meantime, the war began resolutely in 1937 after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, and Japan has changed its direction toward a funding-based export and craft policy. The Joseon Art Exhibition and the Craft section was also affected by this policy and transferred from the academic affairs bureau to the department of social studies education. Since then, the percentage of winning works in the crafts department has been high in folkcrafts and lacquerware, which were highly valuable as export crafts, while the ceramics field has been lower. The ceramic works exhibited at the Joseon Art Exhibition can be said to be a product of the ceramics industry of the Governor-General, which has been in progress since 1910. The Government-General of Joseon, which has incorporated a ceramic policy focusing on industrial ceramics, tried to cultivate industrial ceramics according to the demand class of ceramics rather than comprehending the Korean ceramic culture. The ceramic works exhibited at the crafts department in the Joseon Art Exhibition exhibit also showed this tendency. For example, the reproduced ceramics of Goryeo celadon was not made in the ceramics style produced in the Goryeo Dynasty but in the ceramic taste that reflects the preference of the demand class of the first half of the 20th century. In addition, most of the ceramic artists are Japanese, with only a small number of Koreans from Japan, which is a result of Japanese-centered ceramic production techniques and a ceramic policy.
