The purpose of this study is to enable the use of logotherapy when physical pain experienced patients are linked to reduction(relaxation/alleviation) of pain and suffering. In this study, the writer observed and analyzed the validity that negative phenomenon(distress) of pain in severe pain patients is improved to positive phenomenon(eustress) through the 8 sessions of logotherapy program, and tracked the results to confirm the effect on patients with severe pain and suffering. For the purpose of the research, an mixed research method was implemented a concurrent embedded strategy of mixed method. The participants of this study were 16 in/out patients with severe pain at G Hospital located in G City, Gyeonggi-do. The structured questionnaire was conducted before the logotherapy program to verify about physical pain, emotional pain, social pain, life meaning, spiritual meaning assessment. On the final result of the study, the effectiveness of the program was confirmed by conducting mid assessment after the 4th session and final assessment after the 8th session. The logotherapy program was conducted for 10 minutes introductory and 40 minutes main activity at each session. The participants were provided a guideline about how logotherapy program is suitable for patients with severe pain and suffering. And the participants were sharing what they realized or felt from the others the main activity according to the topics of each session. Those sharing were an opportunity for the participants to experience positive feedback about themselves; to look back on their life experiences; to find new life tasks and calling; to share their feelings, thoughts, enlightenment, and regret at the end of each session of the program about 10 minutes. In results of the study, In quantitative evaluation, after participating in the logotherapy program, the degree of physical pain, emotional suffering, and social suffering perceive decreased, and the degree of meaning of life and spiritual meaning increased. In qualitative evaluation, as a result of the logotherapy program's attempt to analyze cases by a selected six people about their experiences in patients with severe pain and suffering, the participants were mainly grateful, positive, valued their family; they had a desire to devote themselves to faith; to understand and forgive others for their anger; to experience psychological peace in the belief that their existence would gain rest in God after death; to love and care for the people who are currently living together in their own circumstance. These participants' statements can be attributed to the increased internal awakening of self-discovery, choice, uniqueness, responsibility, and self-transcendence, which are the five signboards of logotherapy, and thereby improved the meaning of the moment, the long-term meaning, and the ultimate meaning have been improved. Based on these findings, the logotherapy program has been shown to be a significant effect both quantitatively and qualitatively in enabling pain and suffering reduction(relaxation/alleviation) for patients those who are in severe pain and suffering with a holistic healing perspective that incorporates physical, mental and spiritual aspects.
