Abstract
A Case Study of Art Therapy for Youth Who Have Experienced Father’s Bereavement.
Nam, Hea Ryung Major in Art Therapy Education The Graduate School of Education Hanseo University (Supervised by Professor Oh, Hyun Sook) This study allowed youth who had no proper mourning after their father's death and had physical and mental difficulties to re-examine their condolences through art therapy programs. The purpose of the study is to refer to Kubler Ross (1969)'s fifth phase of mourning--the stage of shock, the stage of anger, the stage of compromise, the stage of despair, the stage of acceptance and the developmental mourning process of Worden (2009)--and to conduct an art therapy program that has been reorganized into three stages of mourning, and how it affects adolescents who have experienced father’s bereavement. The subjects of the study were a 15-year-old male A teenager who attended a middle school in S city, where his father died, and from September 2019 to May 2020, he conducted art therapy programs once a week for 50 minutes, including pre-post-examination, for 50 minutes per week. The research tool conducted the HTP (House-Tree-Person) test three times before-middle-after test, divided the SCT test into pre-after test, analyzed each session's observation log and work to record the changes in each session, and observed the changes shown in the art therapy process. The results from this study are as follows:First, through the art therapy program, he was able to express himself by reducing the defense mechanism, and he became confident as he had a goal to do it. In addition, he felt satisfaction and achievement through art activities, and naturally faced and accepted father's death in art activities, expressing his longing for father. In the meantime, he explored his family's responsibility and positive self-image and developed a will for a positive future. Second, significant results were also found in HTP draw tests and sentence completion tests in addition to art therapy programs. The HTP draw test showed the process of entering mourning - facing mourning - through pre-, mid- and after-examination of each emotional, cognitive, and behavioral area, which showed that the overall size of the painting has grown and that the force of the pen pressure is creating energy and changes in emotion are taking place. The detailed description of the painting's expression and the body's proportions were stabilized compared to the dictionary, and they were also focused on not going to the bathroom frequently. The sentence completion test also shows that the process of mourning took place, given the sentences that showed a change in attitude toward the father or a sense of responsibility for the family. Thus, as with the results of this study, teenagers who experienced bereavement from their fathers, suppressed their sadness, and failed to express their emotions properly, were able to set positive self-image and goals by accepting reality and expressing their emotions. Therefore, it can be seen that teenagers who have experienced bereavement and have not undergone proper mourning procedures have a positive effect on mourning (emotion, recognition, behavior) through art therapy programs.
