In this paper, a study was carried out to investigate the distribution and ecology of Clithon retropictus (Martens, 1879), level II endangered wild species. The results of this study are summed up in the following.
The study was performed from March 2016 to April 2020 to discover the distribution and ecological characteristics of C. retropictus (Martens, 1879) of Korean origin. In terms of the domestic distribution, C. retropictus was found to exist in a number of regions on the southern coast of Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do, as well as even in small streams located on islands such as Wando-gun, Namhae-gun, Geoje-si, and Jeju-do, etc. Most habitats of C. retropictus were located downstream of rivers, the regions which are always affected by salinity although there is a difference in salinity due to difference by tide. The average salinity of the entire habitats was analyzed to be 0.7 ∼ 16.6‰ at low tide and 1.0 ∼ 17.3‰ at high tide, and the overall salinity ranged from 0.7 to 17.3‰, which was within the range of freshwater water zone and brackish water zone. Changes in salinity of the area surveyed in the present study are expected to be more elastic actually, as they frequently occur due to upward and downward movements of the water bodies (water). As a result of this study, it was confirmed that the brackish water was adapted not only to the brackish water zone but also to the fresh water zone adjacent to the former. From the study, it became obvious that C. retropictus lived not only in the area corresponding to the brackish water zone but also in the fresh water zone adjacent to it, a fact confirming that it had already adapted to changing salinity. In an attempt to determine the changes in size and density of individuals according to the habitat environment of C. retropictus, the size of its diameter was identified and a square ball (1 × 1 m) was used to quantitatively measure the number of individuals. The size of an individual turned out to increase as it went upstream, except for the HB Stream located in Jeju Island out of the four rivers under research. On the other hand, however, HB Stream was confirmed to show no difference in individual size of C. retropictus between the spots of its inhabitation due to the narrowed space of the habitat following dryness and wetness in the upstream region as well as due to short distance of about 50 m between the spots inhabited by C. retropictus. As for the average population density of the surveyed streams, IG Stream was found to have 37.8 (±24.04) individuals/㎡, GH Stream 33.8 (±27.18) individuals/㎡, HY Stream 34.8 (±14.69) individuals/㎡, and HB Stream 16.0 (±7.47) individual/㎡, respectively, indicating that slight differences existed in each stream and, if analyzed in detail, there were differences by season and spot surveyed. The spot-to-spot analysis found that, in case of IG and GH streams, the density was lower in the downstream than in the upstream. The reason was that the downstream was longer time exposed to salinity than the upstream, and had adverse conditions inhabiting the area owing to the limit of resistance to salinity. It was also made clear from the study that the distance between the upper and lower points of HY and HB streams was relatively short, and the factors such as salt exposure time, substratum, etc. which might influence inhabitation of C. retropictus acted same among the streams, resulting in similar population density. In winter, however, it was ascertained that the density of individuals decreased due to the characteristics of C. retropictus which hardly acted but stayed hidden in the bottom of substratum in fear of freezing and low water temperature, although there was a difference by each river. The research of the moving distance of C. retropictus at the intervals of 1, 7 and 21 days confirmed that the range of the moving distance gradually increased with time although the individual mobility was low. Upon observation for 21 days, it was found that it moved up to 17.99 m, and most of the individuals were concentrated within the range of 2 ∼ 3 m while the sporadic distribution was made within 5.99 m, suggesting that the scope of its activities was very limited. From the analysis of the moving distance by season, it was learned that the distance began to increase from spring when breeding and mating were done actively and the distance got longer in the summer and autumn seasons, but decreased as winter embarked. In conclusion, it became certain that salinity, substratum, breeding time, and seasonal changes affected the overall inhabiting aspects of C. retropictus in terms of size, individual density, moving distance, etc.
