Faces convey a range of social information such as personal identity, age, and emotion, and facial attractiveness is one of the major research variables in the field of psychology. The perception of facial attractiveness is influenced by external information that is not included in the face. Several researchers have attempted to explore the effects of individual social influence on the perception of attractiveness in the offline and online environments. Studies have consistently shown the higher a person’s social influence, the likelier it is that his or her face will be perceived as attractive in the offline area, whereas the corresponding relationship in the online world is not clear. When limited information is available online, an individual’s social influence can be gauged through his or her number of friends on SNS. Some previous studies showed that when an individual has a larger number of friends on SNS, he or she seems or is perceived as more attractive, whereas other research has not found any correlation between the number of friends and facial attractiveness. However, these previous studies commonly have some limitations in their research methods, such as demand characteristics in experimental procedures. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to verify systematically the effects of social influence information in SNS on facial attractiveness by overcoming the limitations of previous research. We have created instagram pages for influencers or non-influencers by manipulating the number of friends(followers, following), likes, and comments that indicate social influence. Influencers with high social influcence usually receive much of attention of others but don't pay attention to others, so that the instagram page in the influencer condition has the higher number of followers and likes but the lower number of following. In addition, because of the positive support of many people for the influencer, the number of comments on SNS was large and of a generally positive tone. In the case of a non-influencer, the situation was the opposite to that of an influencer in that the individual had fewer followers and likes, was following more people than were following him or her, and only had one comment, which was in the form of spam. We manipulated only the information related to social influence, and employed the identical face in both conditions. After showing this instagram page of a influencer or non-influencer, we generated an image of internal representation in each condition through the reverse correlation technique. In this main experiment, we performed an attractiveness and personality evaluation (based on extroversion, sociability, goodness, and trend sensitivity) on the internal representation images corresponding to two conditions (influencer and non-influencer). As a result, no differences in attractiveness and personality were found according to social influence. This supports previous research findings that social influence information does not affect facial attractiveness perception. This study is meaningful in that it manipulated the level of social influence of the individual on the Instagram platform, and we verified the more systematic method by using the reverse correlation technique, which overcame the limitations of previous studies.
