The purpose of this study is to explore the procrastination in 『Hamlet』 from a different perspective. Many scholars have been focusing on Hamlet’s personality, actions, and situations to reveal the reason why Hamlet failed to proceed his revenge until the very end. However, the limit existed. Comparative analysis is a new solution to overcome the limitation. It allows researchers to explorer the similarities and differences to find the missing point. Therefore, this study compares Shakespeare’s 『Hamlet』 and Ji Junxiang’s 『The Orphan of Zhao』, one of the most well known plays during Yuan Dynasty of China, to reveal the secret of the procrastination in 『Hamlet』. In fact, there are many researches that compared 『Hamlet』 and 『The Orphan of Zhao』. However, these researches only cover the difference between Western and Asian literature and values, not their possibility of expansion or utilization for the future research. 『The Orphan of Zhao』 has similar storyline with 『Hamlet』. Both Hamlet and the Orphan are obliged to take revenge in the beginning, but they both failed to get revenge until the very end of the plays. However, no scholar claimed the revenge in 『The Orphan of Zhao』 is delayed. Unlike 『Hamlet』, how come the revenge in 『The Orphan of Zhao』 is not considered as delayed? Based on this question, 『Hamlet』 and 『The Orphan of Zhao』 are compared to study Hamlet’s procrastination. In this paper, reason, process and result of revenge in 『Hamlet』 and 『The Orphan of Zhao』 are explored. Followings are the details of three topics. Revenge motivation – In the beginning of both plays, Hamlet and Orphan seem very distant from the main character who have a vengeful duty. Hamlet was in despair, and even considered committing suicide. And orphan was regarding his enemy as his foster father. Then, ghost and Cheng Ying stepped into these two men’s life to reveal the brutal truth. However, there is a significant difference between ghost and Cheng Yong, the credibility. Unlike Cheng Ying, who shows his loyalty to sacrifice for the country, ghost in 『Hamlet』 has shown many suspicious images. Therefore, Hamlet has no choice but to doubt the identity of the ghost, and searches for a hard evidence. Revenge process – The process of revenge was difficult because the revenge target of Hamlet and the orphan are king and colonels. However, unlike the orphan who had the help and sacrifice of countless people, Hamlet received no help. Rather, he was used and tricked by many people, even by his friends and loved ones. This difference can be attributed to the difference between Western and Asian literature, unlike Asian literature that makes the helper of the main character stand out, Western literature is designed to help the hero overcome hardships and adversity alone. Therefore, the long process of revenge in 『Hamlet』 can be considered as rough gates for the hero Hamlet to defend and save his corrupted country. Revenge ending – While the ending of 『Hamlet』 is a tragedy where revenge succeeds, but majority of the characters die, 『The Orphan of Zhao』 ends with a hopeful ending, despite many sacrifices during the process of revenge. After analyzing the different ending of the two works, two messages that the writers want to convey were found. Shakespeare questions the meaning of revenge and legitimacy. Ji Junxiang expresses a hope that the lost country will be restored through efforts. Another interesting study is how Western and Asian tragedies differ from each other. Study shows that Asian literature usually ends with a hopeful ending, no matter how tragic it is, due to its optimistic and bright personality, while Western literature always ends tragedy in tragedy. Therefore, with these differences, there is a high possibility that even if Hamlet’s revenge was not delayed, the tragic ending stays same. Based on the study, Hamlet’s delay in revenge is partly due to his character and his surrounding, but there are external causes that need to be considered, such as cultural differences, history, and social status. This study is not a complete analysis of the cause behind Hamlet’s procrastination. Besides 『The Orphan of Zhao』, many other plays need to be compared for a better investigation. However, it is possible to conclude that authors and literature background, history and tradition are also very helpful in studying the problem of Hamlet’s procrastination.
