In this study, three kinds of soil stabilizers such as iron nanoparticles impregnated biochar(INPBC), INPBC based bead type(INPBC/bead) and suspension type(INPBC/suspension) were prepared to improve the existing disadvantages of the biochar as an amendment such as potential loss and low stabilization efficiency for As in the contaminated soil. The purpose of this study is to develop the amendment for stabilization of the soil contaminated by As and heavy metals and to evaluate the characteristics of stabilization performance of INPBC/bead and INPBC/suspension. During hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process, the mixture of pruning residue and ferric nitrate (0.1∼0.5M) as a lignocellulosic biomass and a precursor of iron nanoparticles, respectively, were added and heated to 220°C for 3 h in a teflon sealed autoclave, followed by calcination at 600°C in N2 atmosphere for 1 h. For the characterization of the as-synthesized materials, cation exchange capacity (CEC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used. The change of Fe(III) concentration during HTC process influenced characteristics of produced INPBC and adsorption efficiency towards As(V) and Pb(II). According to the Langmuir isotherm test, maximum As(V) and Pb(II) removal capacity of INPBC were found to be 11.81 and 116.28 mg/g, respectively. In order to improve the existing disadvantages of biochar powders as an amendment that is the flammability and potential loss by wind and water, INPBC/bead produced by cross-linking of sodium alginate and INPBC/suspension were prepared with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution as a dispersion stabilization, respectively. Soil-E and Soil-E were sampled from E-abandoned mine and S-abandoned mine in South Korea, respectively, for the cultivation test that was carried out for the evaluation of the stabilization performance. For Soil-E, the total As exceeded the counter-measure standard and total Pb exceeded the concern standard of MOE of South Korea (Ministry of Environment). For Soil-S, the total As and Pb exceeded counter-measure standard and the total Cu exceeded the concern standard. During the cultivation test, INPBC, INPBC/bead and INPBC/suspension were applied to Soil-E with the ratios of 1, 2.5% (w/w) and to Soil-S with the ratios of 2, 2.5%(w/w) and the stabilization was proceeded for 4 weeks. After treatment, the single extraction procedure including TCLP, SPLP, KSLT, NH4NO3, PBET method was conducted to determine the hazardous of As and heavy metals from contaminated soils. According to SPLP results, the concentrations of As and heavy metals in the extractant were decreased with increasing the amendment ratio and satisfied the drinking standard level of MOE of South Korea. In the TCLP, KSLT test, the reducing of mobility of As and heavy metals from two soils was confirmed with high stabilization efficiency. NH4NO3 and PBET test results showed that the as-prepared amendments reduced the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of As and heavy metals from two soils as compared to the un-treated soils. The fractionation of As and heavy metals in two soils using sequential extraction method indicated that the ratios of faction 1 and 2 that correspond liable and known as bioavailable fraction was decreased and fraction 3 and 4 that correspond relatively non-liable fraction was increased by application of INPBC, INPBC/bead, INPBC/suspension. This phenomenon can be explained by increasing of iron concentration in contaminated soils by application of INPBC that posses abundant iron nanoparticles on the surface and complexation and co-precipitation of As with iron. And it was assumed that heavy metals were stabilized due to adsorption onto oxygen-containing functional groups or iron oxide surface and alkaline precipitation as well as cation exchange. The significant difference of stabilization efficiency between the types of amendment was not observed. Therefore INPBC/bead and INPBC/suspension can be promising amendments for soil contaminated by As and heavy metals. Especially, INPBC/bead that can maintain optimum pH of upland soil and its bead shape while the cultivation duration can be a suitable amendment for paddy field soil.
