In order to build and maintain an army that wins in combat, combat strength that is stronger than that of the enemy must be created and correctly employed. There are two types of combat strength : tangible combat power, the visible, quantitative element, and intangible combat power, which translates the tangible combat power into actual combat power. Throughout the years, the ROK Army has tended to evaluate combat power based on standards for tangible combat power. While the importance of intangible combat power has been acknowledged, there have been few attempts in research to properly assess combat strength due to the difficulties in quantitatively evaluating it. This study ‘operationally defines’ the ROK Army’s science-based combat training(KCTC training hereafter) as actual combat. The ROK Army’s science-based combat training conducts and evaluates training in an environment that is most similar to actual combat in order to overcome the limitations of not being able to assess actual combat. This study analyzes the effect of components of intangible combat power of 27 battalions that trained here on each battalion’s combat results(here, referring to the overall score each battalion received). This study first establishes what hierarchical structure the components of intangible combat power should have in accordance with the ROK Army’s definition of combat power, and then evaluates the degree of importance of each components by using different methods. Firstly, in order to examine the degree of importance of each component of intangible combat power that is held by military experts, an analysis of surveys was done by utilizing the AHP method. Secondly, a statistical analysis was undertaken to examine the effect of and the degree of importance of intangible combat power components on the training results of 27 battalions that conducted the KCTC training. Lastly, the degree of importance that each military expert and the entire group held in the first AHP analysis and the degree of importance resulting after the KCTC training results were provided to the military experts, and how much the initial belief changed was investigated. The results of study reveal that there was a discrepancy between the degree of importance held by the military experts and the degree of importance derived from the KCTC training results. In addition, in the second Delphi method that provided additional information, it is shown that military experts greatly adjusted their initial evaluation by referring to other people’s perceptions and the KCTC training results. These results represent an empirical case study which suggests that there is still insufficient research in intangible combat power and also that if indicators for each components of intangible combat power were to be developed in the future, accumulated knowledge must be provided by military experts as well as quantitative data derived from KCTC training. One regret the author has about this study was the lack of academic materials on intangible combat power. In this regard, the author believes that there is a great need to research the degree of importance of each components of intangible combat power that is held by people who have experienced KCTC training and those who have not. This study, taking into consideration of sample size, had to analyze battalion-level training results. However, the degree of importance of each components of intangible combat power may differ according to the level of echelon, thus requiring research across different levels of echelons. The author believes that a study which makes a comparison with study results analyzing KCTC training results of brigade-level units currently conducting combat training will have great significance.
