The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the Big 5 personality factors and play teaching efficacy of early childhood teachers on teacher-child interaction and examine the mediating effect of play teaching efficacy in the influence of the Big 5 personality factors on teacher-child interaction. To this end, this study conducted a survey on 308 teachers working at child care centers and kindergartens in Incheon, Gyeonggi, and Seoul. This study conducted a questionnaire survey by sharing online links through acquaintances working as early childhood teachers and performed statistical analysis using PASW 18.0. Correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted to confirm the relationship between the Big 5 personality factors of the early childhood teacher, play teaching efficacy, and teacher-child interaction. Also, Sobel Test was conducted to confirm the effect of play teaching efficacy. The results of this study are as follows: First, among the Big 5 personality factors of the teachers, neuroticism showed a negative correlation with play teaching efficacy and teacher-child interaction, while extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness showed a positive correlation with play teaching efficacy and teacher-child interaction. This shows that the low degree of neuroticism among the personality factors of early childhood teachers is related to positive teacher-child interaction and play teaching efficacy. Second, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness among the Big 5 personality factors of early childhood teachers, and play teaching efficacy affected teacher-child interaction. The lower the level of neuroticism and the higher the agreeableness, conscientiousness, and play teaching efficacy, the higher the quality of teacher-child interaction. As for the influence on teacher-child interaction, the explanatory power was high in the order of play teaching efficacy, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism. Third, play teaching efficacy partially mediated the effects of neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness among the Big 5 personality factors of early childhood teachers on teacher-child interaction. This finding can be interpreted that neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness among the Big 5 personality factors affect the teacher-child interaction with play teaching efficacy as a mediator, not only directly but also indirectly. These results are subject to certain limitations. For instance, the objectivity of personality factors response from early childhood teachers and teacher-child interaction may be lower than observational data since this study applied self-report questionnaires. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct studies through observation of the actual situation on teacher-child interaction. Further studies need to be carried out regarding the Big 5 personality factors, play teaching efficacy, and teacher-child interaction of kindergarten and child care center teachers, with the necessity of continuous research. Despite these limitations, this study verified that a high level of agreeableness and conscientiousness and a low level of neuroticism among the Big 5 personality factors of early childhood teachers positively affect teacher-child interaction and play teaching efficacy, both directly and indirectly. These results provide basic data on the need for pre-service teacher education and educational programs. It also adds meaning that this study investigated the influence of the Big 5 personality factors of early childhood teachers and play teaching efficacy on the teacher-child relationship, which has not been studied so far. Furthermore, this study shed light on the importance of play teaching efficacy by discovering the mediating effect of play teaching efficacy in the Big 5 personality factors and teacher-child interaction.
