Since the first occurrence of voice phishing in Korea in 2006, the government and related institutions have been preparing various measures such as providing preventive measures to consumers to minimize damage. However, despite these efforts, voice phishing has been steadily increasing to date. Accordingly, there are an increasing need for effective voice phishing prevention measures.
This study analyzed conversation data between voice phishing scammers and victims of the Korean Financial Supervisory Service's using text mining. Based on behavioral economics, The words and keywords used by scammers for psychological manipulation were verified. Besides, it was analyzed that victims were able to avoid voice phishing by using the words of which topics and keywords.
This study empirically analyzed the voice phishing text data and tried to interpret the analysis results based on the theory of behavioral economics. Through this analysis result, it was suggested to prevent voice phishing from the side of companies and public institutions and the side of consumers.
As a result of the text mining analysis, it was found that voice phishing scammers frequently use words that emphasize a limited period, such as "now, progress, once, today, first." The voice phishing scammer tried to manipulate the psychology to make the victim feel impatient or fearful by using the above words. Before voice phishing, it was verified that scammers put the victim into a "cognitive miser" state, making rational judgment difficult.
The analysis of voice phishing victims was conducted. In the case of a predicted voice phishing victims, it was confirmed that they showed a passive attitude, using words that sympathize with the scammers, such as "Yes, proceed, apply, submit, agree." On the other hand, victims who avoid voice phishing use words such as "no, threat, report, confirm, appropriation, police station." They have the characteristics of suspicious of scammers and trying to confirm facts.
It is important for companies and public institutions not to use words and expressions that can cause consumers to feel psychological pressure, impatience, or fear. In other words, companies and public institutions should not use words and expressions used by voice phishing scammers. Also, information must be provided concisely and clearly.
In the case of consumers, it is important not to answer unknown calls. When a consumer receives a phone call, it is important to quickly determine the intention of scammers. Consumers have to ask questions and object to the content of the call. And, it is necessary to check the facts with the relevant institution.
The findings of this study may contribute to establishing effective voice phishing prevention and consumer protection measures in the government and related institutions.
