This study analyzed the changes in the body size and silhouette by wearing a corset in the early 19th century, and investigated the influence of the pattern shape and production technique of the 19th century corset on the change in body size and silhouette. Two types of experimental corsets (type A, type B) are different in manufacturing technique and pattern shape but they were worn in early 19th century. Type A has a pattern that was divided the pattern covering the torso into three pieces of the front, side, and back. The center back line of Type A was curved that spreads below the waist line. The gussets were inserted into the chest and waist. Type B has a pattern that was divided the pattern covering the torso into front and back which has the deeply curved side line those form a front silhouette that widened below the waist line. Its center back line was straight. A gusset with tightly inserted coding was inserted in the chest. Bonings are inserted partially and there were shoulder straps on both styles. The experimental garments are made based on the shape and size of selected corset pattern styles. In order to understand the changes in body size and the degree of changes in body silhouette after wearing the experimental garments, we shortened the back closing length by 10cm, 20cm, 30cm, and 40cm from the standard length and analyzed the changes in each step. The test results are as follows. First, chest circumference increased from the 10cm tightening stage after wearing the Type A and Type B experimental garments, but even if the experimental corset was worn by tightening it more strongly, it was not significantly different than when tightened by 10cm. Underbust circumference and waist circumference is decreased continuously as the back closing string was tightened more. In particular, the change was more stand out after wearing the Type B experimental corset. As for the Type A corset, the front interscye length continued to increase and the back interscye length decreased as the back closing string was tightened more. Second, subjects’ front silhouette had a greater change in waist width than shoulder width after wearing two types of experimental corsets. Subject1 and 3 showed noticeable changes in the lateral shoulder point depth, underbust point depth, and anterior waist point depth, which could identify the side silhouette after wearing the Type A experimental corset. Subject1 and 3 increased the lateral shoulder point depth and decreased the posterior waist point depth from when the back closing string was tightened by 10cm after wearing the Type A experimental corset. In addition, the underbust point depth and the anterior waist point depth, which represent the anterior silhouette, have increased by about 2cm, and the shoulders are lean backward. In other words, the posture of subject1 and 3 changed to the posture that their chest and abdomen pushed forward after wearing the Type A experimental corset. The Type A experimental corset pushed the chest forward and shoulder backward straightening the spine by tightening the back closing string. It is interpreted that the busk inserted into the center front line and the center back line angle that spread below the waist line and back armhole width have an influence. When the Type B experimental corset was worn, the change pattern was similar to that of the Type A experimental corset, but the degree of change was smaller when the Type A experimental corset was worn. There was a difference in the effect of wearing a corset according to the subject. Among the subjects, Subject2, whose body size was relatively large, did not change significantly after wearing the Type A corset, but from tightening back closing string 10 cm after wearing the Type B corset, the lateral shoulder point moved 2.5 cm forward, the underbust point depth and anterior waist point depth representing the anterior silhouette were reduced by more than 2 cm. These results suggest that when the Subject2 wears the Type B experimental corset, it changes to a bending posture. These changes suggest that the Type B experimental corset which have straight center back line, the deeply curved waist line and narrow armhole width strongly compresses the waist to change into a bending posture. Third, as a result of subjective evaluation, the subjects evaluated that they felt a hard pressure around the waist after wearing two types of experimental corsets. In particular, subject2, who had a large body size, received a hard pressure around chest and abdomen after wearing two types of corsets. Subject3, who had a small body size, did not feel the pressure as much as that of other subjects. In the evaluation of the body shape and posture correction effect, the evaluation of the subjects was similar. The Type A experimental corset was highly evaluated for the effect of pushing the chest and belly forward, improving the posterior silhouette, and pushing the shoulders backward. However, in the evaluation of pushing the bust up, the Type B experimental corset was evaluated higher than the Type A experimental corset. The level of satisfaction with the changed posture was higher in the Type A experimental corset, and the level of satisfaction with the changed front and side silhouette was higher in the Type B experimental corset. The results of this study suggest that when wearing a corset in the early 19th century, the shoulders are pushed backward, and the chest and abdomen are pushed forward. In this study, two types of female corsets worn in the early 19th century were reproduced, and it was confirmed that silhouette changed after wearing them. However, since the number of subjects was 3, in order to generalize the results, more subjects should be studied in further research.
