The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) on the social skills and Social Emotional Development of Children with Intellectual Disabilities. The study was conducted from January 2018 and the research process consisted of subject selection, pre-test, animal-assisted therapy program implementation, post-test, and result processing. The subjects of this study were third to fourth-grade students who were enrolled in I city H school. Before the introduction of the animal-assisted therapy program, Children with Intellectual Disabilities were informed of the purpose of the program and the purpose of the study. Children with Intellectual Disabilities who agreed to participate in the study were checked for similarity in social skills and Social Emotional Development through the pre-test. The homogeneity of the 12 adolescents was confirmed, and half the subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group and half were assigned to the control group. Through this animal-assisted therapy program, Children with Intellectual Disabilities in the experimental group attended the program consisted of 40 minute sessions that were conducted once a week for a total of 12 sessions and the Children with Intellectual Disabilities in the meantime the control group was not exposed to any treatments. As for the research measurement, social skills scale and Social Emotional Development scale were measured and their changes from the pre-test to the post-test were analyzed. As for data processing, SPSS/WIN 24.0 program was employed. T-test was conducted in order to examine the difference from pre-test to post-test and also the homogeneity between the experimental and control groups. The results were as follows. First, pre-test showed that the experimental group and the control group were homogeneous group in social skills(z=-.89, p>.05) and Social Emotional Development(z=-.80, p>.05). Second, the experimental group where the Animal-Assisted therapy program was conducted showed more significant change in social skills(z=-2.20, p<.05) than the control group did. Third, the experimental group where the Animal-Assisted therapy program was conducted showed more significant change in Social Emotional Development(z=-2.20, p<.05) than the control group did. The sub-elements of Social Emotional Development, independent with teacher, peer interaction, achievement motivation showed improvement on the score. The results of this study prove the effectiveness of an animal-assisted therapy on the social skills(z=-.89, p>.05) and Social Emotional Development(z=-.80, p>.05). of Children with Intellectual Disabilities.
