In this study, a low temperature hydrothermal carbonization(HTC) reaction was applied as a recycling treatment method for coffee wastes with high moisture content and environmental problems during treatment to derive optimal generation conditions focusing on the adsorption performance of biochar. In addition, in order to confirm and evaluate the potential as an adsorbent for heavy metals and VOCs by chemically activating biochar to develop micropores, a comparative study was conducted between Biochar and Activated Biochar. Physical and chemical analysis to check the similarity between coffee wastes collected from different locations to coffee wastes used to produce Biochar was found to be representative because similarities were present and both legal standards were met. The first batch test was conducted to derive optimal generation conditions for coffee wastes created using HTC reaction and the yield and iodine adsorption performance were analyzed. The results showed that the optimal generation conditions were approximately 260℃ in reaction temperature and 1 hour in reaction time. The analysis of iodine adsorption performance showed that 382.92 mg/g was analyzed in coffee wastes, and that Biochar produced under optimal conditions was approximately 687.11 mg/g, an increase of approximately 1.79 times higher than that of coffee wastes. KOH was used as an activator to chemically activate the biochar produced under optimal conditions, and the second batch test was conducted by analyzing the yield and iodine adsorption performance. The results of the second batch test showed that the optimum activation temperature was approximately 700 ℃, the optimal mixing ratio of Biochar and KOH was 1 : 0.5, and the optimum activation time was 1105.33 mg/g of iodine adsorption performance at 1 hour. For the adsorption experiment of the generated adsorbent, heavy metals and VOCs adsorption experiments were conducted on coffee wastes, Biochar, Activated Biochar, and activated carbon (PAC and GAC) currently available as a control. The heavy metals used in the heavy metal adsorption experiment were copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd), mixed with them and prepared 100 mg/L to conduct a column test for 12 hours. As a result, heavy metals showed adsorption efficiency in the order of lead (Pb) > copper (Cu) > cadmium (Cd), and adsorption efficiency by sorbent type was shown in the order of active bichar > PAC > Biochar·coffee wastes. In the VOCs adsorption experiments, 200 ppm of toluene gas was used for 300 minutes, and the adsorption experiment was carried out using a globular activated carbon rather than a powder-type activated carbon, considering that the adsorbent was a gas. The results show that Biochar and coffee wastes have little removal rate of toluene gas, while Active Biochar, which has been adsorbed at 240 minutes, has a better adsorption efficiency than GAC which was adsorbed at 140 minutes at the start of the experiment. Therefore, in this study conducted an evaluation of the absorbent applicability of Active Biochar, which activates Biochar generated by low temperature hydrothermal carbonization reaction, and found that it was more efficient in a short period of time than coffee wastes, bichar and other active carbon(PAC and GAC).
