The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of three different types of captions(English vs. Korean vs. Keyword) on Korean English Learners' vocabulary learning. The participants were 76 Korean middle school students. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected by administering the identical vocabulary test as a pre- and post-test, and conducting surveys and interviews over a period of 3 weeks. The participants were divided into three groups and they watched two English videos with different captions twice. The first group (n=25) watched fully captioned videos, while the second group (n=26) watched Korean captioned videos, and the third group (n=25) watched keyword captioned videos. Prior to the treatment, they completed a pre-vocabulary test and survey. During the treatment, they completed a post-vocabulary test, survey, and the activity worksheet. After the treatment, interviews were conducted to see more about the participants' perception toward the different captions and vocabulary learning. The results revealed that there were no significant differences between the three groups on the immediate post-test. However, the results of the worksheet during the treatment revealed that the English captioning group and keyword captioning group were more beneficial for vocabulary learning. They picked up new words much better than the Korean captioning group. The survey results showed that the learners were not very interested nor confident about using captions as a way of learning vocabulary. With regard to this, the interview results showed that the presence of the vocabulary test had a great impact on the perceptions of vocabulary learning using captions. Moreover, there was a statistically positive correlation between the satisfaction and the use of captions. Thus, the results of the present study suggest that utilizing English captioned video or keyword captioned video can be a valuable tool for Korean English learners' vocabulary learning. In particular, the results of the worksheet suggest that the keyword captioned videos were very useful focusing on and picking up new words. These results can contribute to successful vocabulary learning by presenting more effective types of captions to students, teachers, or English content developers who wish to improve their English vocabulary through captioned videos.
