The purpose of this study is to examine middle school students’ perception toward World Englishes, English speaking anxiety and how World Englishes and English speaking anxiety correlates. The aim of this study is to raise perception toward World Englishes and to provide directions for successful communication.
In order to conduct this research, 132 Korean middle school students were chosen to participate in this study. To examine the World English perception, the survey was divided into perceptions of English as an international language, perception of ownership of English, and perception of the diversity of English. In order to explore English speaking anxiety, the survey was divided according to conversation partner(native speaker, non-native speaker). The findings from this research can be summarized as below.
First, Korean middle school students’ perceptions were positive toward World Englishes. In detail, they were positive toward English as an international language, students agreed with a tool of communication between countries or societies in the global society, and perceived that English is not just a language of a particular country, but a language shared by the international community. According to a survey of the differences in the perception of World Englishes, the higher the ability to speak English was, the higher perception of World Englishes. The difference in the perception of World Englishes according to the frequency of English communication, there was a difference between the group who communicated in English and the group who did not communicate in English, and it showed that the group who communicated in English had a higher perception.
Second, Korean middle school students felt less anxiety about speaking English when they were talking to non-native speakers than they were talking with native speakers, but in both cases, they felt moderate anxiety. When speaking in English with native or non-native speakers, they felt anxious because they were worried about grammatical errors and pronunciation mistakes. As a result of the survey on the difference in English speaking anxiety according to the learner’s variables, the higher the ability to speak English was, the lower the English speaking anxiety. The difference in English speaking anxiety according to the frequency of English communication also showed that the more frequent the English communication was, the lower the English speaking anxiety.
Third, There was a low negative correlation between perception toward World Englishes and the anxiety of speaking English when speaking with native or non-native speakers in English. In other words, the higher the perception toward World Englishes is, the less anxious the English speaking will be when speaking in English with native or non-native speakers.
Based on these results, the educational implications of this study are to provide an awareness of English speaking and an opportunity to learn various English in the world. It will be possible to be flexible in communication through the reduction of English speaking anxiety based on the correct perception and opportunities.
