This study set out to analyze composition errors by Vietnamese learners of Korean at the intermediate level and help them correct their errors based on analysis results, resultingly contributing to their improved writing skills in Korean. When learners make errors in their study of a foreign language, such errors help them realize what they are doing wrong and their teachers find out what they need to teach their students, which demonstrates the importance of errors in foreign language study. Learners can improve their skills in the target language by correcting the errors they make. Correction of an error in foreign language study is thus an essential and important process. As the number of Vietnamese people studying Korean has increased since the 2000s, there are many researches on the analysis of their errors. Researches on their writing errors, however, fall short of those on writing errors in English, Chinese, and Japanese. Under the goal of devising effective plans for the correction of writing errors for Vietnamese learners of Korean at the intermediate level, the investigator examined errors in their compositions, analyzed the causes of their errors, and proposed a couple of teaching and learning plans to help them correct their errors. Chapter II offered an explanation about the theoretical background of error analysis, and Chapter III contrasted and analyzed Vietnamese and Korean in grammatical and vocabulary characteristics. Errors in 20 compositions by Vietnamese learners of Korean at the intermediate level were divided into grammatical and vocabulary ones with their causes analyzed. Based on the causes of errors sorted out by Lee Jeong-hee(2003), the errors were further divided into those influenced by the mother tongue and those influenced by the target language. After selecting the most frequent type of errors, the investigator proposed a teaching plan to prevent such errors. Finally, a couple of teaching and learning plans were prepared for the correction of writing errors according to the revised plan for error correction by Karin Kleppin(1998). They were then administered to four Vietnamese learners of Korean at the intermediate level in a class to see if they were applicable to actual lessons. In foreign language education, teachers analyze errors made by their students. This approach has several advantages including finding out the difficulties they are having and addressing clearly what they do not know. In addition, the students themselves can see what they did wrong and why through error analysis, preventing further errors. It is thus required that analyzing and correcting errors by learners should be handled in an essential and systematic way in foreign language education.
