The purpose of this study was to investigate whether Ceramium kondoi extract (CKE) has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Anti-oxidant effect was determined by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging measurements. CKE increased the scavenging activities of DPPH and ABTS at the range of 10 to 500 ㎍/㎖ in a concentration dependent manner. CKE increased DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities by approximately 81% and 88% at 100 ㎍/㎖, respectively. Nitric oxide (NO), an indicator of anti-inflammation, was measured in RAW 264.7 cells induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). CKE exhibited anti-inflammatory activity at 50 to 100 ㎍/㎖ in a concentration dependent manner. CKE did not show any cytotoxicity at a maximal concentration of 100 ㎍/㎖. Contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids were 264 ㎍ per gallic acid ㎎, 53 ㎍ per quercetin ㎎, respectively. Quercetin, an indicator substance of CKE, was analyzed by HPLC. Quercetin content of CKE was approximately 294 ㎍/㎖. Cream was prepared by adding CKE with the contents of 0.01%. Its stability was tested at 25℃, 50℃ and cycle incubator (-15℃↔50℃) over the period of 4 weeks. In the stability evaluation of the CKE-contained cream, there was no change in pH, viscosity and appearance (color, smell). In the patch test, CKE-contained cream was evaluated as “low irritation”. These results suggest that CKE may be a potential cosmetic material based on its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
