ABSTRACT
Relationship between sleep patterns and prevalence of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome in Koreans over 19 years of age: Analysis of data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018)
Kong, Byungwook Dept. of Pharmacy The Graduate School Yonsei University
This study is a descriptive research study based on data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to analyze the relationship between the average total sleeping time and the time of going to bed and the prevalence of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome in Korean men and women over 19 years of age. Based on the data from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018), the study was conducted on 17,555 adults over 19 years of age, excluding 1,834 people who did not answer to the question on sleep time. In addition, for the study on dyslipidemia, 584 people who did not answer to the question regarding the indicators relating the dyslipidemia were additionally excluded from 17,555 people, and the study was conducted on 16,971 people. For the study on metabolic syndrome, 575 people who did not answer to the question regarding the indicators relating the metabolic syndrome were additionally excluded from 17,555 people, and the study was conducted on 16,980 people.
As a result of this study, it was found that an excessively long sleep time of 9 hours or more could increase the prevalence of dyslipidemia, and an excessively short sleep time of less than 5 hours could increase the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 1.190 times higher in the group with excessively long sleep time 9≤ hours than the group with sleep time of 7~8 hours, and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 1.414 times higher in the group with short sleep time of <5 hours than the group with sleep time of 7~8 hours. In addition, the additional study on the group with sleep time of 7~8 hours was conducted to confirm if the prevalence of dyslipidemia is related to the sleep initiation time. As a result of the additional analysis, it was found that the late sleep initiation time such as 4 a.m. could lead to a high prevalence of dyslipidemia even though the people get enough sleep. However, no statistically significant difference was observed in other sleep initiation time groups. As the results of this study, it can be concluded that it is important to get in the habit of sleeping at least 5 to 9 hours and avoid going to bed too late.
