ABSTRACT
Career Transition Experience of Middle-aged Women in 'Helping professions’
Kim, Mi Ryung Department of Theology The Graduate School Yonsei University
This study analyzes the career transition experience of middle-aged women to ‘helping professions' revealed in life stories, and explores social context and inner experiences in a psychological and systematic approach. Based on this exploration, a model for pastoral care and counseling coaching which are for middle-aged women was proposed. Participants included in this study were seven married women who changed their careers to the ‘helping professions’ in the middle ages. All data were collected through Schütze's life history-story method. For the analysis of the data, first, a life history research methodology was used, Rosenthal's narrative life history research methodology and Mandelbaum's method that categorizes life domains, turning points, and adaptations into chronological themes were used as the framework of analysis. Second, analysis was performed using Graham's psycho-systemic approach and Neuger's correlated spiral methodology, which are pastoral research methodologies. As a result of the analysis, in the chronological life history of each of the seven people, the story of the career path by each stage of the career life through the talked life history and the life history experienced appeared in the background of the social period. Through the thematic analysis, the 3 areas of life, 4 turning points, and 7 adaptation methods were identified as the related topics, respectively. First, the subject of life is to show the developmental unfold of career life: ‘the realization and frustration of one's first dream’, ‘the effects of sudden events in a relationship’ and ‘a newly found me in interaction with society’. Second, the turning point involves opportunities that have become direct triggers for career transition in middle age. The topics include ‘unexpected pain and staying on the scene’, ‘reaction in the opportunity to experience real needs’, ‘choice for living and the use of hidden abilities’. Third, the adaptation methods are the way of adaptation seen in the lives of each participant throughout their respective lives, and these adaptation methods have been shown to serve as an important values for the participants to choose and make decisions on real middle-aged career transitions. The topics for adaptation methods were ‘practical learning and determination’, ‘questions and reflection on the ultimate’, ‘keeping the value to pursue’, ‘selection and execution to add depth’, ‘find and enjoy real freedom’ and ‘following the needs of the world’, respectively. This study has significancy in that it has expanded the experience of career transition of middle-aged women in ‘helping professions’ into a system surrounding their entire lives and individuals, and considered the topic of career transition in an integrated way by psychologically exploring in social context. Through an psychological approach, the interpretation of the experience was enriched by approaching the inner unconscious dynamics of women's experiences in a archetypal manner, and an attempt to combine the introverted energy pursuit of the middle age with the experience of career transition was made. Furthermore, a model for career-related discussions and highly relevant topics of calling, the practical and integrated model of the spiral moving toward wholeness in chaos with the positive/negative axis and the socio-cultural/psychological axis acting on the calling broadened the understanding of the calling, has been proposed and leaded to broadening the understanding of the calling. The experience of middle-aged women's career transition in ‘helping professions’ was discussed in four perspectives. First, from a career construction perspective, life themes and professional characteristics were found as reasons for career-related actions in the story of career through life. It has been confirmed that career adaptation through women's lives has undergone career compromise through gender role stereotypes, parental influences on career decisions, and the events of the times, above all, they have been interacting with society and forming a career path amid changes caused by child-birth and child-care. Second, through a archetypal perspective, we discussed how an individual's intrinsic and in-depth perceptions and experiences were related to and acted on career-related behaviors. The move to give meaning autonomously has been revealed in the midst of an introspection that is drawn internally rather than causal, and creativity that pursues change. The experiences of middle-aged women who changed their careers to ‘helping professions’ were classified into four types from a archetypal perspective. The four types are ‘Daimon's Call’ who had natural relational characteristics but transits to helping in the middle age, ‘Wounded Healer’ who motivated her pain experience to help people with the same wounds, ‘The Seeker of Truth in the Temple’ who realized taking care of oneself with continuous questions of life, and ‘Daughter in the Age of Care’ who does the things of care while looking at the needs of the times. Furthermore, the journey of career transition was confirmed as a journey of female heroes and individuation. Third, from the theological point of view, women's internal and external experiences were discussed in the movement of the system through a psychological systematic approach. The breadth and depth of female experience were added by grafting the correlated spiral method of feminist perspective to the actual experience of the individual, which is the center of the psychological system. In these women's experiences, the theological theme revealed the relationship between the internally formed image of God and the career. The middle-aged career transition served as a creative advancement in the system, and the imbalance of power in career life was shown to require dismantlement in women's career experiences. Values competing in women's careers in work-family balance require wise integration between achievement and relational values, and it has been confirmed that the power of love is at the center. This career change of middle-aged women made it a virtuous cycle in the system, in line with self-realization and social needs. Based on the results and discussions of the study, a model for pastoral care and counseling coaching, which are for middle-aged women was proposed. As a model for the process, a ‘Creative spiral career construction model’ was proposed, and a model centered on calling, an ‘Integrated calling model for self-realistic career transition’ was proposed, respectively. The creative spiral career construction model consists of four stages: 'detection of the vibration of everyday life', 'inner descent and stay', 'the meeting of the archetype and the calling', and 'the path of the virtuous cycle'. It is similar to the archetype of the female hero's journey, but it has the form of a spiral that does not return to its original position and continues to progress. The integrated calling model has a structure that pursues wholeness in the positive/negative axis, advances toward integration, and pursues a whole calling through the needs of the world and the calling of the archetype in the axis of the sociocultural/psychological domain.
