This study analyzes the process of change in North Korean residential housing from 1945 to 2020, focusing on architectural aspects and socio-cultural backgrounds. Residential housing in North Korea underwent changes influenced by factors such as socialist ideology, policies, laws, institutions and architectural preferences of the “supreme leader.” Hence, this study aims to explicate the diachronic changes in residential homes and complex relationship of each factors. To this end, the construction policy and legal system reflecting the socialist ideology are reviewed, and trends and factors of change are analyzed based on the following three periods: 1) basic construction period of residential housing (1945-1960s); 2) development and disarray period in residential housing (1970s to mid-2000s); and 3) maturity period of residential housing (late 2000s to 2020). After liberation, the Soviet Union had a great influence on the construction of residential houses in North Korea's urban and rural areas in its socialist policy, building technology, and architectural style. In terms of architectural appearance, traditional housing styles such as roofs were maintained in single floor houses. The neoclassical style of the multi-storey house was implemented on the facade of the building, but according to the industrialization policy and large-scale construction, it was implemented and adopted in practical terms. Due to the influence of the sub-district planning, five-story high-rise residential houses were built in cities while rural areas were built four stories or under based on the rural village planning. In terms of interior space, it was planned as a passage room in a single-story house, and a hallway-centered type in a multi-story house. The traditional housing style, such as closet and outdoor bathroom, was reflected in the housing space and changed that compromised with the Soviet style. Since the 1970s, urban residential houses tended to become high-rise due to technical factors such as sliding construction methods and reflected the architectural tastes of Kim Jong Il with preference for diversity, three-dimensionality, and uniformity. The layout and architectural elevation of the house began to appear in various forms. No changes were observed in the number of floors in rural houses as an effort to resolve urban and rural disparity, but the building facade showed a tendency to modernize. With the effect of central heating, kitchens were made upright and front room (jeonshil) was planned, which is a multi-purpose space where meals and other dwelling activities took place. This improved the dwelling environment and residential life. As the space became differentiated and development of furniture and home appliances, traditional residential styles such as closets gradually disappeared. In the late 2000s, the supply of residential houses resumed, with the construction of 100,000 households in Pyongyang, and various changes were observed in the construction of residential homes. In particular, the construction of a 70-story building and the green architecture appeared after Kim Jong Un took power, which reflects the regime's inclination to vaunt the system and socialist superiority despite sanctions. The facade became more glamorous that embodied the ideology and further embellished with the use of various decorations, colors and finishing materials. As the communal living room was planned, the space became more differentiated and personalized along with its role as a family-centered space. The introduction of the dining space and the arrangement of the kitchen and the adjacent entrance contributed to the reduction of household labor. On the other hand, after marketization, the housing concept changed from residence to ownership, and the phenomenon of housing stratification based on changes in social status began to appear. North Koreans tend to show off their wealth through interior design or a luxurious exterior, and various housing needs according to lifestyle changes are reflected in the construction of residential housing. The North Korean residential housing has underwent great changes since liberation that reflected the socialist ideology and “juche construction,” which promotes the principle of "national in form, socialist in content” through the resolution of the urban and rural gaps, improvement of people's lives, and adopting local characteristics. Such principles are expected to continue for some time and the architectural characteristics of the Kim Jong Un period, which attempts to follow the global trend, are expected to have an effect on the changes in the residential housing of North Korea in the future.
