The purpose of this study is to utilize the latent growth modeling to examine the impact of infant father's participation in parenting on externalizing behavior problems of children, with the following two factors as mediators: depression in mothers of infants and parenting behaviors in mothers of children in their early childhood. There are two research questions in the study. First, how does the initial value or variation rate of infant fathers’ participation in parenting affect the initial value or variation rate of externalizing behavior problem of children by having the initial value or variation rate of parenting behaviors in mothers of children as a mediator? Second, what is the effect of the initial value or variation rate of infant fathers’ participation in parenting on the initial value or variation rate of externalizing behavior problem of children by having the initial value or variation rate of depression in infants’ mothers as a ? This study used the following data from the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) for analysis: data from the first year (0 year old) to the third year (2 years old) of life which is considered to be the period of infancy, and data from the fifth year (4 years old) to the seventh year (6 years old) of life which is considered to be the period of early childhood. The data collected in this study used the SPSS 21.0 program to perform descriptive statistics and correlation analysis on the research subjects' characteristics and variables, and reliability analysis on research tools. The validity of the research model was verified using the AMOS 21.0 program and latent growth modeling was conducted. The main findings of this study are summarized as follows: First, the initial value and variation rate of infant fathers' participation in parenting were found to have a perfect mediating effect on the initial value and variation rate of aggressive behavior of infants and on the initial value of attention disorder by having the initial value of mother’s depression as a mediator. In other words, parenting participation of infants’ fathers has an effect on reducing children’s aggressive behavior and attention disorder by affecting depression of mothers with infants and children. The fact that parenting participation of infants’ fathers at home and its variation rate reduced the behavior problems in children by affecting the depression of mothers with infants and children demonstrates the importance of fathers’ participation in parenting from early stages. In addition, high levels of depression in infants' mothers were found to have a constant negative effect on the behavior problems of children, suggesting that such parental support should be centered on marital and family support within the family. Second, it was found that the parenting participation of infants’ fathers had a negative effect on aggressive behaviors and attention disorders of children by having mother’s warm parenting behavior as a perfect mediator. However, the variation rate in the parenting participation of infants’ fathers did not show any significance. These results can be interpreted as follows. The parenting participation of infants’ fathers works as a psychological support system for mothers within the family system which builds the foundation for mothers to provide warm parenting. By having it as a mediator, aggressive behaviors and attention disorders of children are also reduced. This study provided empirical data on the effect of parents in the development of children’s behavior problems by showing the importance of mothers as the main caregiver influencing the development of infants as well as the significance of fathers' participation in parenting and its variation rate from the perspective of the family system theory. In particular, the importance of an ecological approach for guiding externalization of infants’ behavior problems was demonstrated by clarifying the influence of joint parenting through the parenting participation of infants’ fathers on mothers' early depression and later parenting behaviors of mothers with children in early childhood. Therefore, it suggests that preventive and integrated interventions are needed that take into account family dynamics and roles such as fathers’ parenting participation, mothers’ depression, and mothers’ parenting behavior within the family system. Considering all this, the results of the study are expected to be used for parental education and the development of intervention programs for children’s behavior problems and ultimately serve as the basic data for healthy development of children.
