Abstract
A Study on the Psychosocial Experience of Adoptive Mothers with Children Adopted in Early Childhood
Jeong, Hannah Department Counseling, Graduate School of Christian Studies, Baekseok University
This is a phenomenological study that explores the psychosocial experiences of adoptive mothers with children adopted in early childhood in-depth. For this purpose, as the study subjects, adoptive mothers in their 40-50s with more than 2 years of experience in raising their adoptive children who were adopted during their early childhood were selected. The method used was Colaizzi’s phenomenological research method to analyze the in-depth interviews of the participants. As a result, the analysis derived 117 formulated meanings, 40 themes and 18 clusters of themes. First, the research question is “what was the motive of adoptive mothers to adopt children in their early childhood?” The results are summarized as follows: Adoptive mothers who adopted children in their early childhood ‘are infertile yet wanted to become a mother', ‘decided to adopted children in early childhood due to the external influences', ’believed in Adoption Practice of in Early childhood children based on religious beliefs’, and ‘wanted to satisfy the deprived needs of infants who were rejected from adoption’. The experience of these participants clearly showed their desire to have children even though pregnancy and childbirth were not possible, and it was found that adoption was encouraged by family members and motivated by the positive images of adoptive families they have seen around their social circles or through the media. Second research question is, “what are the psychosocial phenomena experienced by adoptive mothers raising adopted children in early childhood?” The results of the research question are summarized as follows: 'thrilled to become a mother after all the hard work', 'embarrassed by the unexpected behavior of the child', 'overwhelmed by the wild horse-like temperament of the adopted child', 'shocked by the adopted child's aggression', 'feeling self-conscious and worried that the adopted child is lagging behind his/her friends', 'feeling gloomy because I can't see the end of child-rearing', ‘afraid of being misunderstood as a bad adoptive mother', 'anxiety about the family system being shaken after adopting a child', ‘distressed due to the impact of adoption on the existing family structure' and 'wanting to end the adoption’. After adopting an infant with much eagerness and anticipation, the participants were soon confused and burdened by the unexpected and maladaptive behavior of the adopted children. They were also shocked by the level of aggression of adopted children and feared that they would be perceived as bad mothers when in pain and frustration induced by the stress of raising the adopted children. When the family system was shaken and negatively affected by the adopted children, they expressed the wish to return the adopted child and regrets over the adoption. Third research question is, “what is the coping response of adoptive mothers raising adopted children in early childhood?” The summary of the results of the question are the followings: 'Recognizing my limitations and seeking advice from those with experience in adoption', 'Reflecting on myself as an adoptive mother', 'Giving up my fantasies and ask for help from your family', 'Recognizing my ignorance and actively educate myself', 'Trying to stay perseverant and look for a professional agency.’ It was found that in the midst of frustration and unexpected experiences, the participants reflected on themselves as a parent and achieved insights into their unsolved issues so that they can understand and raise the adopted children well. In addition, it was found that they realized their limitations, educated themselves actively, and sought help from professional experts. The significance of this study is, first, it provides psychological counseling data that reveal the in-depth the psychosocial experience of adoptive mothers who adopted children in their early childhood to help adoptive mothers with their problems that arise in the process of adoption and child-rearing. Second, it has value that can be used as evidence when developing a counseling program and post-adoption service to help adoptive mothers by recognizing how adoptive mothers cope with their experiences of adopting children in early childhood. Third, it is significant that the psychosocial experience of adoptive mothers who adopted children in early childhood was revealed from an ecological perspective, including not only family, but also neighbors, church communities, society, adoption-related institutions, and countries. Fourth, the purpose of this study is to prevent adoptive mothers from falling into a tunnel vision, becoming frustrated, or ending their adoption due to the childrearing stress specific to adoptive mothers. And it has been revealed that prospective adoptive mothers who want to adopt children in early childhood need pre-adoption parent education different from infant adoption, and systematic post-adoption services for adoptive mothers and adoptive families within a stable system even afterward.
