This study examines the roles and difficulties of teachers in the play-centered curriculum through studying the field experiences of early childhood teachers during the transition period in curriculum. The 2019 revised Nuri curriculum is a play-centered and toddler-centered curriculum that emphasizes the concept, characteristics, and importance of play to children, and realizes learning through play. Through in-depth interviews, this study reviews practice methods and joys and difficulties of teachers in the period of a transition of curriculum from theme-centered to play-centered. Through this, we intend to inform what is necessitated to reflect the revision of the Nuri curriculum in the actual field. Research Question 1. How are 5-year-old’s early childhood teachers playing the role of play supporters in the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum?
Research Question 2. What difficulties do 5-year-old’s early cildhood teachers face in fulfilling the role of play supporters in the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum?
In order to answer the research questions, we interviewed five 5-year-old’s early childhood teachers working for early childhood education and childcare facilities from October 2020 to November 2020 to study the opinions and practicing details of the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum, and the joys and difficulties experienced in the implementation process from the perspective of teachers. The purpose of the study, the method and procedure of the study were explained to and agreed upon with the study participants, and finally, consent was obtained for participation in the study. From August 2020, data were collected through pre-meetings and in-depth interviews, and additional interviews were held if necessary. The number of interviews was once or twice per participant and one interview took about 1 hour on average. We classified the main keywords according to the purpose of the study, and mid-analysis details were documented accordingly. The mid-analysis details were confirmed by the participants and the requests for revision and supplementation from the teachers were actively reflected in the data analysis to faithfully convey the voice of the participants. The final category was derived by categorizing it three times in total and while analyzing the categorized data we interpreted the role of childhood teachers as a play supporter in the transition period of curriculum which the data showed. The research results in this study, which appeared through the process above, are as follows. First, early childhood teachers played a role as a play supporter while trying a play-centered curriculum and there were changes according to the role execution. Teachers demonstrated a lot of thoughts and attempts to expand children’s play and tried various changes such as life themes, play tools and play method so that plays could proceed according to the likes and interests of children. Children's play was observed from various aspects such as the reasons for selecting a play, introduction, development, expansion and finishing and these were documented to connect to and communicate with the parents of the children. However, changes in the form of documents for recording observations of play came as a burden of work, and the play-centered curriculum, emphasizing autonomy and flexibility, brought about differences in perceptions between the principal and the average teachers, causing conflict. Second, early childhood teachers played a role as a play supporter attempting a play-centered curriculum and changes in children were observed according to the role execution. Children learned in the play suggested by the teacher and the play that children construct themselves, which appeared evenly in five areas including basic lifestyle habits. In addition, children designed a new play beyond the prescribed plays that fused the experiences of oneself and those of same ages and felt more excited when children’s common experiences such as in-house events were expanded to a play. Third, the difficulties that early childhood teachers faced while implementing the play-centered curriculum was the difficulty caused by lack of understanding of the curriculum first. Due to Covid 19, smooth training was not achieved, and even if the training was received, the training was conducted without proper lecture data, causing further confusion. Given the emphasis on the autonomy and flexibility of institutions and teachers, teachers who are familiar with the subject-based curriculum often find it difficult to organize appropriate class management and play support and intervention methods. In this process, there was a difference in the form of play of children according to the difference in teachers leading or helping plays and in the attitude of recognizing the play-centered curriculum according to the competence of the teachers within the same teaching tool, play, and curriculum. In addition, the peculiarity of children aged 5 and their parents who are familiar with the theme-based curriculum was a factor that made it difficult to operate the play-based curriculum. Most of the 5-year-olds were unfamiliar with organizing and expanding their own play as their prior experience in educational institutions was too long, and teachers said that the change in the curriculum that took place when elementary school enrollment was short of remaining caused confusion for children. In the case of 5 years old, where education for connection to elementary school is essential, there is a separate curriculum to develop learning attitudes such as basic life habits and Korean language and number education, which made it difficult to balance the prior curriculum and play-centered curriculum. Nevertheless, the positive attitude of teachers who try to fulfill lots of roles of teachers, such as play supporters, observers, and helpers, became a cornerstone to better settle the play-oriented curriculum. In order to expand the play of children, the play of children was observed more closely than in the previous curriculum, and to provide support in a variety of ways in which play can be expanded sufficiently, positive emotional communion was achieved by having sufficient interaction with the children. These research results find out the process of changing the role of early childhood teachers in the transition period of the curriculum, and suggest that how well teachers understand the curriculum and the role of themselves is a key to a successful completion of the curriculum transition period. Therefore, when the curriculum is revised, it is necessary to reflect the voices of teachers who execute the curriculum directly to children in the field, and it is necessary to minimize confusion in the field through the sufficient preparation process for a curriculum revision. For this, we hope that research containing the experiences of teachers will be actively conducted and since 2020 was in a national disaster due to Covid19, it is difficult to say that the revised curriculum was in full progress, it is necessary to study the experiences of institutions and teachers that have applied the play-centered curriculum after Covid19 is over. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as basic data that can help to successfully go through the transition period of the curriculum that appeared after the 2019 revised Nuri curriculum was revised.
