The development of information and community technology in the modern society has expanded the social categories of individuals and people can interact with others without time-space constraints. Accordingly, we live in an era where adolescents are exposed to much more information through the society and internet compared to what is learned at school and textbooks. In addition, adolescents confront extensive ideas and discussions in the society as well as various conflicts than what is proposed in the education curriculum and if individuals do not have firm values or a sense of self-identity during this process, it could cause confusion while they interact with others. For this reason, there is a compulsive need of education that can promote the self-identity exploration of adolescents. In middle school art, self-portrait is an activity where students can think about their identity most intuitively. Through the self-portrait class in art, students learn about the relationships between themselves, others, and the society and personally perform expression activities and contemplate and examine themselves in different ways and express their self-portrait in three dimensions. The self-portrait section in art textbooks before the 2015 education curriculum failed to bring vivid educational changes despite the changes in the education curriculum. However, after the 2015 art education curriculum was presented, some art textbooks deviated from representation centered self-portrait class that was restricted to expressive domain and proposed classes from new perspectives and focused on learner experiences and a fused teaching-learning method. However, this situation could possibly lead to education imbalance due to the choices of art textbooks and intensify educational gap. Based on these problems, this study will analyze for each area on how the composition of the self-portrait class in present art textbook varies for each publishing company and concentrate on suggesting the directivity and structure of self-portrait class as well as the standard and supplementation of the insufficiencies. With this purpose, this study targeted on 12 types of 2015 revised art textbooks and conducted an analysis for each unit and activities․illustration regarding the self-portrait section by each publishing company. The analysis findings of the self-portrait section for each publishing company showed that in the present art textbooks, each publishing company has varying sections and units for self-portrait and there was a big variation in the achievement standard, lesson objectives, and activities. Most publishing companies chose an education method that was focused on drawing the face, but there were publishing companies that applied other methods such as Dong-A Publishing Company where they propose a self-portrait class through an ego-box and also Kumsung Publishing Company where fused units were suggested to provide a rich self-portrait program in the textbook. These methods suggested directivity and potentials for changes in the self-portrait area. It is anticipated for this study to contribute to developing a balanced self-portrait section in middle school art textbooks in order to solve the current imbalance and for the course design to be structured as fused classes that incorporate diverse view, expressive techniques, and extensive perspectives in order to develop more authentic textbooks.
