The domestic EPC plant construction industry requires a digitalization strategy that the fourth industrial revolution technologies are applied into the conventional construction process to have global competitiveness.
The interest in digital transformation has recently increased in the construction industry, and it shows positive changes such as BIM expansion, AWP and VR/AR technology.
The purpose here is to analyze specific cases of the advanced western companies to break away from the methods under the conventional construction process and to find directions in establishing strategies for digitalization of the domestic EPC plant industry.
Currently, the global construction market is leading to low priced bidding that reflect order based strategies due to excessive competition for orders, and project risks are increasing due to lack of experience and information on new markets when exploring new markets. In particular, COVID-19, which has recently become an issue around the world, is causing an economic recession, but it is estimated that the overall digitalization of the construction industry could accelerate in combination with the resulting social structure change. The government has also announced the strategic direction of the Korean style New Deal project, emphasizing "SOC digitalization." Therefore, the construction industry will also need above other thing an early introduction of digital transformation in the entire process of engineering, purchase, construction, and maintenance.
The growing interest in digital technologies is due to its use to make productivity innovation. In this respect, the EPC plant construction industry is considered as a productivity-oriented necessary and possible industry. Achieving a successful digital transformation will allow expecting the benefits of "predictability, sustainability, flexibility, and co-operation" beyond productivity.
In EPC plant construction projects, BIM, AWP and VR/AR technologies are widely used as risk management tools based on digital technology.
In the case of BIM technic at construction sites is being utilized in a variety of ways, including BIM 3d model preparation, design error, and interference check, and process simulation. Therefore, the domestic construction companies are gradually expanding BIM to minimize the risk of project execution in response to complex client requirements.
In the case of the AWP technic, the project schedule is divided into detailed levels, established a communication channel between each organization, and strengthened the cooperative system among project participants to improve the project management during project life cycle. In addition, visualized tool utilization will help the efficiency to simulate overall design suitability and pre-construction process by VR/AR technology.
