YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, Y3Al5O12) has excellent plasma resistance and recently has been used as an alternative to Y2O3 as a chamber coating material in the semiconductor process. However, Y2O3 is due to the presence of an impurity phase and difficulties in synthesis and densification, many studies on YAG are being conducted. In this study, YAG powder was synthesized by an organic-inorganic complex solution synthesis method using PVA polymer and Al2O3 seed powder. The PVA solution was added to the precursor sol, in which the yttrium and aluminum nitrate salts were dissolved, and the precursor was calcined to a porous and soft YAG powder. In this fabrication process, the effects of the molecular weight and the addition amount of PVA polymer on the particle size and particle shape of the synthesized YAG powder were also evaluated. In addtion, nano-size alumina powder seed was employed instead of aluminum nitrate salt for control of particle size and enhancement of densification. The sintering behavior of the YAG powder compacts according to PVA type and grinding time was studied through the microstructure examination of the sintered samples. All samples were sintered in an air atmosphere without any sintering agents. A single phase YAG powder could be synthesized at a heat treatment temperature of 1000℃ by the PVA polymer solution route, and when Al2O3 seed is applied, the single phase YAG powder could be synthesized at a higher temperature of 1500℃. In particular, when the higher molecular weight of PVA is used and the PVA content is increased, the grinding effect by ball milling process was maximized. A fine, sub-micron sized YAG powder was obtained by the ball milling for 20~30 hours. The powder compacts were sintered to 98%~99% relative density after firing at 1650℃ showing fully densified surface microstructure. However, few micro pores were observed in the microstructure of fracture inner surfaces.
