The purpose of this study is to create a Christian early childhood music education program that can help develop children's musicality as well as their faith by utilizing the music of Bach. Research questions set according to this purpose are as follows:
1. What would the educational meaning of such a Christian early music education program that would utilize the music of Bach be?
2. What would be the composition of such a program?
2) -1 What would be the purpose and goal of such a program? 2) -2 What kind of content would make up such a program? 2) -3 What kind of teaching-learning method could one utilize for such a program? 2) -4 How would one evaluate such a program?
This study first examined the relationship between art and Christian spirituality, music and Christian worldview, and music and Christian education. It can be said that music is a central concept in Christian education because it is optimal for understanding the divinity, mystery, admiration and awe associated with Christianity. Also, as God has allowed humankind to govern music, one must help children to develop their God-given musicality by creating and employing music, revealing and exalting God in the process. It may also be said, therefore, that the use of the life, faith, and music of Bach, a great composer of Western music, has educational value and is particularly suitable for Christian education. Since Bach was a devout believer as well as a father, co-worker, friend, and citizen, his music as well as his faith, character, attitude towards life, and sincerity are educationally applicable and valuable. The art that Bach has produced exalts and praises God the Creator, confessing of faith in Christ's sacrifice on the cross and accepting the risen Christ as the living Lord. In order to use Bach's life, faith, and music in this program, his life as well as works were studied, and an attempt was made to discover the value of Bach's music by examining the exemplary nature of his work as well as its influence on future generations. The reason Bach was able to compose such excellent music was found in his Christian faith, and through this, implications for the composition of the program were obtained. On the basis of this theory, a conceptual framework based on the notion of the grace of God was formed by examining domestic as well as international studies and related literature on the topic of early childhood music education and inclusive education. SIEM's DBME theory, Gordon's theory on the learning of music, and Fogarty's integrated model were selected as models for the program composition. Furthermore, a survey for teachers of early childhood education was conducted on the education of music and the viability of using classical music. The actual conditions and needs of the company were investigated and analyzed. As a result of this analysis, it was discovered that it is necessary to use not only Bach's music but also his life and faith in order to develop a program that can help children's musicality and development of the whole person, including the development of faith, and academic-oriented music education. It became apparent that systematic music theory, integrated and diverse activities, as well as age-appropriate activities should be included in Christian early childhood music education programs. Based on the preliminary results of the survey, the purpose, objectives, content, and teaching-learning method of the program were selected, and a Christian early childhood music education that composed primarily of the music of Bach was created, having been revised and supplemented through expert consultation and consultation. The purpose of such a Christian early childhood music education program that utilizes the music of Bach is to develop one’s musicality as granted by God and to promote the development of the whole person, including the development of one’s faith. As such, the goal is to understand that God created music and granted humanity with the ability to create music, to understand the elements of music and to express one’s emotions in various manners, to develop curiosity towards the music of Bach and to participate in musical activities with a joyful heart. The contents of the program included specific Christian notions, such as the creation, the Fall, redemption, thanksgiving, and love, as well as key musical notions such as tone, dynamics, temper, rhythm, pitch, form, and harmony. Listening to sounds and listening to music, singing, playing instruments, expressing the music through the body and through activities other than music, listening to stories related to the composer's life and work, and the concept related to musical aesthetics, interest, curiosity, value, and positivity were included. In order to select the music of Bach for the program, six criteria were selected through prior research, and five Bach pieces were selected through this process. In the teaching-learning stage of the program, the activity stages of listening to music, sharing thoughts, listening to stories, understanding, expressing, and evaluating were included in the introduction-development-conclusion of the composition. The stage of listening to music is the stage of appreciating music sensibly and associatively, and the stage of sharing thoughts is the stage of expressing one’s feelings and thoughts through language. The stage of listening to the story consists of listening to the stories on the topics of activity, music, and the composer. DBME theory was applied to allow a wider understanding of music and its composers. The comprehension stage is the stage of learning musical elements and musical language, which was constructed using Gordon's theory of learning music. The expressing stage allows one to express music through various activities, using Fogaty's integrated model. Finally, the stage of organizing program activities is completed by evaluating the activities. The roles of teachers in implementing the program included role models, providers of musical experience, those who would scaffold the experience, initiators of interest, observers and evaluators. The core of evaluating this program is to measure how it influences the development of young children's musicality and faith. In order to measure the musicality of children, an evaluation tool was selected by dividing their musicality into three categories. The test tool of BeopSoon Kim (2009) was selected as a test tool for musical cognitive ability, and EunYoung Bang (2008)'s test was chosen as a test tool for musical propensity. As a test tool for one’s ability to express music, MCSM, as translated by Heo Soon-hee (1996), was chosen. Park Kyung-sook (2007)’s method on evaluating the development of young children's faith was used. The conclusion drawn on the composition of this program is as follows. First, it is essential to help young children to develop their musicality through Christian early childhood music education and to pursue the development of a whole person, including one’s faith. One must strive to govern and develop music according to God's command to do so, as He has granted humanity with musicality, creativity, and aesthetics. To this end, it is necessary to develop and implement Christian early childhood music education so that children can develop musicality and adults can promote the development of the whole person, including the development of their faith, by utilizing music – secular and Christian – based on God's grace. Second, this program should include not only Bach’s music but also his life and faith, which has educational value, to teach children lessons as well as to draw interest and sympathy. Bach's music, which forms the basis of Western music, is outstanding not only because of his artistic and technical excellence, but also because his music includes his faith, character, attitude towards life, and sincerity. Therefore, it would be ideal to construct a Christian early childhood music education program based on not only Bach's music but also on his life and faith. Third, an early childhood music education program should be an academic-centered music education that helps students learn various concepts of music and not merely be activity-oriented or function-oriented. Breaking away from early childhood music education that focuses on fragmentary activities or functions for playing musical instruments, children would come to understand the meaning and value of music through comprehensive music education activities that include music history and aesthetics. Early childhood music education programs should be organized for children to learn about the composer's beliefs and worldview. Fourth, early childhood music education programs should be systematically structured according to the level of young children so that they can improve their cognitive musical ability. It is necessary to create programs according to the level of the children using music learning theory so that they can begin to learn various musical phrases and musical elements, including tone, dynamics, temper, rhythm, pitch, form, and harmony. Fifth, an early childhood music education program should be composed of music education that incorporates a variety of activities, not focused on a few select activities. The purpose of early childhood music education is not only to develop young children's musicality, but also to aid in their holistic development. Therefore, it is necessary to develop children's musicality and other subject areas by marrying several different models of inclusive education. Suggestions for future studies based on these conclusions are as follows. First, this study was originally planned to construct a Christian early childhood music education program using Bach music and to verify its effectiveness, but the experiment could not be conducted due to COVID-19. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the effectiveness of this program by a comparison before and after completion of the program to see how it affects the development of young children's musicality and faith. Second, it is necessary to explore the possibility of developing an academic-centered early childhood music education program using SIEM's DBME theory so that the notion of music is delivered holistically. This is particularly essential in order to break away from Korea’s heavy-handed focus on activity-oriented and functional-oriented education in early childhood music education. Third, it is necessary to explore the possibility of a teacher education program for Christian early childhood music education in order to aid in the teachers’ understanding of Christian early childhood music education, as well as to address issues among teachers, such as a lack of confidence and conflicts arising from various teaching-learning methods.
