Fake news, which, particularly, have been widely spread out during the US presidential election in 2016 and the political turmoil of the impeachment of the president in 2017 and the succeeding presidential elections in South Korea, have recognized as a troublesome public issue. Fake news, which are prominent now in the our political sphere, are generally fabricated and disseminated through the Internet and/or Social Network Services(SNS). As a result, it is difficult to find out who faked the news. And their spreading speed was so fast that they have seriously done harm the public interest. It has been recognized that fake news, by disseminating political misinformation and distrust, are damaging not only the media credibility in general but also the value of sacred democracy itself. In this context, this study, based on with the hypothesis of the Third-Person effect, focuses on the people’s perception of fake news. The Third-Person effect assumes that the media or its messages affect others more than myself, because I am not easily swayed one, a solid person. From this theoretical perspective, the purpose of this study was to examine the perceptual and behavioral factors of third-person effects on SNS fake news. The analysis of the online survey data of 593 respondents showed that, first, there was a perceptual bias towards fake news, supporting the third-person effect. The respondents tended to be biased toward the others, that is, the general public and, particularly, those who supposed to have ideologically other side of political disposition from me. They thought the others were more likely to be affected by fake news than they were. Second, the amount of the third-person effect appeared differently, depending on the social distance which was conceptualized in terms of psychological and political ones in this study. That is, the members of the respondents’ family and relatives were perceived to be more affected by fake news than themselves, and the general public was perceived to be affected more than the former. In addition, those people who were considered to have the ideologically other side of political disposition from me were perceived to be more affected by fake news than those who had similar political disposition with me. Third, among the perceptual factors affecting the third-person effect, the SNS credibility and influence variables within social distance, and SNS credibility variable within political distance were found to be statistically significant. In the similar vein, both self-esteem and self-determination within personal ego variables, in addition to political cynicism and political involvement within personal political variables, were found to be statistically significant ones affecting third-person effect. Fourth, through the hierarchical regression analysis, age was found to be a significant variable in predicting for fake news regulation. In other words, the older they were, the more they support the regulation of fake news. Self-esteem, self-determination, and political cynicism were also significantly positive variables in supporting for fake news regulation. In addition, there was a tendency that the greater the perceptual bias toward the other general public, the stronger support for the regulation of fake news.
