This study observes the effects that the parentification experiences and social support of adolescents have on interpersonal relationship problems to verify the mediating effects of social support in the relationship between parentification experiences and interpersonal problems. For this, surveys were conducted on 330 students from middle school freshmen to high school seniors living in Gwangju. Also, survey data was analyzed as follows using the SPSS 26.0 program. First, the parentification experiences of adolescents were shown to be of medium levels at 2.95 (a scale of 1-5). In particular, the mean value of emotional parentification was higher than median values at 3.40, showing that emotional parentification was experienced relatively more than instrumental parentification, emotional parentification, and unfairness. Second, observations made of parentification experiences according to socio-demographic characteristics and of differences between its subdimensions of instrumental parentification, emotional parentification, and unfairness showed that parentification experiences appeared more among students with at least 2 or 3 siblings compared to those with 1 sibling or less and with birth order, the eldest children or middle children had more parentification experiences compared to only children or those who are the youngest. Instrumental parentification experiences also appeared among the eldest children or middle children more compared to only children or those who are the youngest with regard to birth order. Instrumental parentification experiences were found more in families with monthly allowances of at least 20000 won to less than 40000 won compared to those families with allowances of less than 20000 won. With emotional parentification according to socio-demographic characteristics, the educational levels of mothers and family economic levels showed statistically significant differences in the emotional parentification of adolescents and adolescents from homes in which mothers have high educational levels were shown to have more emotional parentification experiences. Also, the unfairness of adolescents from homes with low household economic levels were shown to be high. Difference analysis conducted on social support showed that social support was higher in groups where subjective academic levels were ‘above average’ than those in which they were ‘below average’. With the educational levels of mothers, social support appeared high among those with mothers with graduate school level educations compared to those who have mothers with high school graduate level educations or less or a college education and social support appeared higher for groups with ‘high’ household economic levels than for those with ‘poor’ economic levels. Analysis results of differences in unfairness showed that unfairness appeared higher for family structures with one parent or other structures than for those with two parents and unfairness appeared higher for poor household economic levels than for those with high or average economic levels. Third, observations made of the effects of parentification experiences and social support on interpersonal problems showed that interpersonal problems appeared to be high with higher levels of unfairness and instrumental parentification, which are subscales of parentification experiences. In other words, it is important to keep adolescents from experiencing unfairness and instrumental parentification within the family to reduce their interpersonal problems. Also, interpersonal problems were shown to be lower with higher social support, showing the importance of social support. Fourth, observations made to see whether social support acts as a mediating variable in the relationship between parentification experiences and interpersonal problems showed that instrumental parentification and unfairness has direct effects on interpersonal problems and indirect effects with social support as a medium, verifying partial mediating effects. Emotional parentification had direct effects on interpersonal problems but effects between the two variables disappeared when the mediating variable was included, verifying the complete mediating effects of social support. In other words, social support was shown to be higher with higher levels of emotional parentification experiences and interpersonal problems were shown to be lower with higher social support. Conclusions and suggestions made based on these analysis results are as follows. First, those with higher numbers of siblings experienced parentification more than those are only children or the youngest and this is because adolescents with siblings have a sense of responsibility to take care of their siblings in place of their parents compared to adolescents who are only children. Families with many children must provide support so that a family culture can be established in which children respect and are considerate of each other and so that parentification experiences do not lean towards a particular child. Second, interpersonal problems appeared lower for adolescents who use their cellular phones an appropriate amount compared to those with no phone use or excessive phone use. This shows that the adequacy of phone use time is important and that recommendations should be made for appropriate cellular phone use time and that guidance should be given to utilize cellular phones in positive directions. Support should be given to the development of education or programs that can enhance online interpersonal skills such as through the use of video conferences or online study rooms that utilize cellular phones or healthy cyber chatting rooms. Also, connections should be made with addiction management centers so that adolescents who excessively use cellular phones can become free of their cellular phone addictions. Third, it is necessary to make observations of contexts within family systems to reduce unfairness and instrumental parentification experiences that appeared to have the most consistent and strong negative affects on the interpersonal relationships of adolescents. Family members interact within existential order and relationships presented in contexts so the unfair impartment of responsibility given unilaterally from parents to their children breaks down the balance of interactions and creates interpersonal problems. Therefore, parental education is needed for parents to be authoritative yet friendly and for the division of family roles to be made more fairly. Horney states that fundamental anxiety is the suffering of serious anxiety and vague worry caused when a sense of belonging or feelings of solidarity are not formed within the family and that fundamental anxiety is a sense of isolation and helplessness felt by a child. Interpersonal relationships occur if the fundamental anxiety that children feel because of their parents is not resolved so it is important for fundamental anxiety to be resolved as parents form secure attachments with their children so that interpersonal problems do not occur. Fourth, this study took consideration of social support in the process in which parentification experiences affect interpersonal problems. Instrumental parentification and unfairness lead to low social support and low social support leads to high levels of interpersonal problems. While instrumental parentification and unfairness directly increased interpersonal problems, they also indirectly increased interpersonal problems through social support and it was shown that social support partially mediates the effects that instrumental parentification and unfairness have on interpersonal problems. On one hand, with emotional parentification, it was shown that social support completely mediates emotional parentification and interpersonal problems, that emotional parentification has direct positive effects on interpersonal relationships, and that interpersonal problems decrease through high levels of social support, showing that there are effects on interpersonal relationships in directions that are different from aforementioned instrumental parentification and unfairness. When parentification experiences affect interpersonal problems, social support is an important variable that that partially mediates and completely mediates in all subscales of parentification experiences. Sharing in the difficulties and pain that adolescents experience and peers, parents, and teachers providing encouragement and support can reduce interpersonal problems. Such social support will be able to reduce interpersonal problems and from different aspects, counseling or cognitive therapy can be effective in reducing the interpersonal problems of adolescents caused by parentification experiences. In modern society in which family structures change and society changes, the parentification experiences of adolescents may be a natural occurrence. Even with identical parentification experiences, unfairness or excessive instrumental parentification can cause negative outcomes but playing an emotional role for family members may also aid adolescents into growing more maturely. This study is significant in that it identified the effects that the parentification experiences of adolescents have on the interpersonal problems of adolescent middle and high school students and simultaneously observed the positive and negative effects of parentification experiences on adolescents. Of the subscales of parentification experiences, more experiences of instrumental parentification and unfairness led to lower social support and higher social support decreased interpersonal problems. On the other hand, more experiences of emotional parentification had positive effects on social support and higher levels of social support reduced interpersonal problems. The results of this study showed that, to minimize the negative effects of parentification experiences on interpersonal problems and to maximize positive effects, aid must be given to develop positive emotions of the self through appropriate social support and intervention. If the relationships among parentification experiences and the psychological and interpersonal characteristics of adolescents are identified, outcomes caused by parentification experiences can be predicted and this can provide prior prevention of possible interpersonal problems along with useful information such as for parent education. This study is also significant in that it provided base material that can be used in the counseling and therapy of adolescents who are suffering psychologically from interpersonal problems.
