In this research, the high-purity lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH·H2O) used for rechargeable battery was manufactured by the simple and environmentally pollutant-free process from waste cathode materials.
As the raw material, waste cathode materials generated from the NCA-based cathode material was used which is used to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles. The thermodynamic behavior was investigated in advance using the HSC Chemistry program, and experiments of reduction thermal treatment for lithium de-lithiuation were carried out using a vertical electric furnace based on the simulation results. The optimal conditions demonstrated through the experiments were temperature 750 ℃, the reaction time 1 hours, and the molar ratio of hydrogen and oxygen was 1.1. The hydrogen concentration gas was 50 % which was confirmed at experiment of bench scale demo equipment.
De-lithiated lithium from the waste cathode material could be converted into a water-soluble material and can be recovered through water leaching. The optimum conditions for the water leaching process were 100 g/L of solid liquid concentration and 1 hour of elution time. The lithium recovery rate was 94.3 % as a solution containing 7.9 g/L of lithium. Both nickel and cobalt were separated as residues and were remained at 1 ppm or less in the solution.
The process water containing lithium could be processed as a final product through a evaporation and crystallization. Primary lithium hydroxide crystals were produced by evaporation the lithium solution at 80 ℃ and vacuum pressure of 159 torr to 17 times. According to the characteristic of lithium hydroxide are highly reactive with CO2 in the air and are easily carbonicated, contents of lithium carbonate in the primary crystal was about 0.9 %. Lithium carbonate is a key impurity to be controlled in lithium hydroxide applied to the cathode material. It was removed through lithium hydroxide re-dissolution and recrystallization processes. The primary lithium hydroxide re-dissolution process was performed at 70 ℃, where the solubility of lithium carbonate was the lowest, under the condition of a saturated concentration of lithium hydroxide of 34 g/L. Lithium carbonate, an insoluble substance, discharged through solid-liquid separation. Lithium loss along with lithium carbonate was demonstrated to be 1.6 %, and the re-dissolved solution was subjected to secondary crystallization. Final lithium hydroxide monohydrate having a purity of 99.5 % was manufactured after recrystalizaion and washing process. The condensate generated during the crystallization process is reused as a process and the crystallization filtrate which is saturated by lithium must be circulated in each process. The total recovery of lithium in the total process was confirmed to be about 92.8 %.
To evaluate the economic feasibility of this process, material balance was established for the process capacity of producing 8,476 tons of high-purity lithium hydroxide by treating 20,000 tons of waste cathode material per year. As a result of economic evaluation by DCF analysis, it was evaluated as an excellent process with IRR of 32.5 %.
