This study aims at verifying the influences of mother's humor style on child's self-esteem and resilience. To achieve this study pupose, mother's humor style and child's self-esteem and resilience were measured on 312 mothers who have children at 1st ∼ 3rd grades in elementary school in the metropolitan area(Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon), and based on this research data, the following results were obtained. First, mother's humor was highest in positive, intimate, and affiliative humors in relationship with child, and then self-enhancing humors, self-defeating humors, and aggressive humors followed in order, implying mothers use positive humors more. Use of self-defeating humors and aggressive humors means indirect pointing out rather than logical explanation or understanding in situation of conflict with children. Second, when mothers used more affiliative humors and self-enhancing humors, children's self-esteem was higher, while mother used more self-defeating humors, children's competence and membership, sub-elements of self-esteem were higher. It implies that mother's use of humor on child promotes emotional changes such as joy, happiness, and relaxing emotions, offers value in one's life, important element of self-esteem and stability in family, and forms empathy and closeness with membership through smile. Third, as mothers used more affiliative humors and self-enhancing humors, children's resilience was higher, while mother used more self-defeating humors, children's causal analysis, optimism, and communication and empathy, sub-elements of resilience were higher. As people with higher resilience consider life as positive and have higher emotional regulation competence and interpersonal ability, positive humors increase these factors. Therefore, when mothers use positive humors more, even in conflicts and problems in parent-child relationships, children can adjust positively their emotions and problematic situations, understand their and mothers' respective perspectives, and find solutions for the situations through efficient communications. Therefore, this study has a significance that it has confirmed the effects of mother's humor style on child's development through it, at the point of lacking the studies about the influences of mother's humor on child. In addition, ths study has also an implication to prepare for basic sources for future studies, suggesting guidelines to use proper and effective humors to parents who pursue their children's healthy emotional development and positive parent-child relationship.
