The Nakdong River basin, occupying about 24% of Republic of Korea, is an important water resources in industry, agriculture, household water, and drinking water for 15 million people as well as a habitat for freshwater biological resources. However, river ecosystems are under great threat from various anthropogenic disturbances (e.g., eutrophication, alteration on the hydrograph, climate change), and thus ecological changes and problems in water quality and biomes owing to the stress have been raised. In order to minimize the social and natural impact of ecosystem changes, it is necessary to determine the extent and cause of the change through long-term monitoring. Phytoplankton, a major primary producer of the aquatic ecosystem, is not only a taxa that has a decisive effect on the biodiversity and productivity, but also responds immediately to environmental changes compared to other organisms to disturbances, thus providing essential information for evaluating the anthropogenic stress. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes and current state of river ecosystem based on the characteristics of phytoplankton communities using environmental and biological data accumulated over a short-term and long-term period for the management of water quality and aquatic ecosystem. Since the data obtained through the field survey are multivariate, and entail temporal and spatial variations, it is complicated to describe the exact causes of changes. Therefore, various modelling approaches were applied to solve biological change in response to stressors. In the first chapter, to verify the applicability of the previously developed prediction models for algal abundances, the changes river system in terms of algal dynamics and the consistently important descriptors of algal blooms were investigated. The best and most feasible artificial neural network model incorporating five input variables (dam discharge, wind velocity, conductivity, alkalinity, and total nitrogen) based on the topology of a probabilistic neural network showed satisfactory results. Some mismatches were found in the post-FMRRP period, which may be due to a discrete event with a newly adapted over-wintering species and different causes of the summer growth of cyanobacteria owing to the river alteration. In the second chapter, to analyze the driving forces and environmental thresholds for the population dynamics of diatom and cyanobacteria change in response to change hydrological regime, 12-year survey data at the lower reach of the Nakdong River was used. I compared two dataset of 5-year sampling results in the lower Nakdong River of South Korea: before and after weir construction (2005-2009 and 2012-2016). For each period, a partial least square path modelling (PLS-PM) was applied to delineate the underlying causalities between multiple drivers (physico-chemical, P; nutrient, N; grazing, G; hydrological, H) shaping diatoms and cyanobacteria, and hybrid evolutionary algorithm and gradient forest was applied to reveal their response to drivers. The weakening of hydrological impacts seems to bring about the introduction of bottom-up and top-down effects on diatoms and the augmentation of physicochemical variables influences on cyanobacteria. Therefore, since the regulated river ecosystem has an environmental condition similar to that of a lake, the influence of nutrients and biotic factors seems to be importantly considered when establishing the management strategies for algal blooms. In the third chapter, to delineate the environmental drivers and the effects of biological interactions for the phytoplankton succession, multivariate autoregressive state-space modelling was applied to 24-year survey data at the lower reach of the Nakdong River. Simultaneously, in order to solve the complexity of multivariate and long-term data, the temporal changes were examined at two scales scales—episodic (from weekly to monthly) and long-term (yearly)—to screen the potential environmental drivers, and functional classification was applied. Over 24 years, the succession patterns of the dominant taxonomic and functional groups decreased in diversity, with the greatest decreases in biomass of Bacillariophyceae and group D (mainly the diatom Stephanodiscus hantzschii), and coincided with the introduction of group H1 (dinitrogen-fixing nostocaleans). Combined with the effects of increased light availability, a positive relationship between groups H1 and M (mainly Cyanobacteria and Microcystis aeruginosa) appears to induce cyanobacterial bloom development over a long period. In the fourth chapter, the relationships between phytoplankton and water quality and nutrient-related factors were analyzed for water resource management at the basin level, and a threshold was developed considering spatio-temporal variations. To classify the geographical clusters based on the environmental conditions and phytoplankton communities, the geo-self-organizing map was applited to a 24-month dataset of 54 stations in the Nakdong River basin. Based on linear mixed models with the random effect of the Geo-SOM clusters on the intercept and the slope, we can propose recommended thresholds for total phosphorus (18.5 mg L−1) and biological oxygen demand (1.6 mg L−1) in the river.
