REACH (Registration Evaluation Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals)[1]의 "Annex XIV"에 속하는 고독성 물질로 분류된다.

Due to high toxicity of hydrazine (NH2NH2), which has been used as a fuel in binary propellant systems for a long time, is classified as a highly toxic substance belong to "Annex XIV”in REACH (Registration Evaluation Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals)[1], a less toxic oxidizer has been developed in this research. While high vapor pressure of hydrazine limits the practical application except rocket propellants of a space-ship [2], hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN) is one of plausible candidates which can be used as a liquid propellant in a homogeneous state. HAN carries excess oxygen atoms, resulting in a fuel source for the green propellant system to be completely burned. Conventional studies have focused on the content or concentration of liquid phase HAN, and composition of HAN-based monopropellants. Although theoretical content of HAN in a liquid-phase was maximum 95 wt% according to the density equation, it is not easy to implement the repeated synthesis with such a high content. Thus, in this study, solid-phase HAN was extracted by means of commercial grade starting materials; 50 wt%-hydroxylamine and 70 wt%-nitric acid. Then, HAN-based aqueous monopropellants with a few recipes were prepared by adding solvent, fuel and stabilizers. Experimental results have found that the initial combination of reactants determined the HAN content in a liquid-phase, resulting in maximum 85.14 wt%. FT-IR analysis confirmed the chemical structure of solid-phase HAN obtained through vacuum evaporation using dual-solvents, showing core functionalities such as N-O, N-H and O-H. The solid-phase HAN contained minimum 3.23 wt% of moisture as analyzed by Karl-Fisher method. Due to a small amount of impurities including residual solvents, the pure content of HAN could reach 86.23 wt%. The decomposition temperature was 187.37 °C, and the maximum calorific value obtained was 276.5 J/g. The monopropellant, prepared with a high content HAN and methanol, ammonium nitrate and water, produced 2321.35 J/g of calorific value.
