This thesis aims at understanding Nietzsche's 'Nihilism' thought. In this work, I examine the development of Nietzsche's thoughts about nihilism, from its advent to its overcoming, focusing on the issue of 'truthfulness.' Truthfulness means the will to tell only the truth to oneself, and thus to be truthful to oneself. A human being who could not endure his/her life as becoming could justify his/her life by distinguishing truth from lie in such a life and by pursuing the absolute truth for certainty and transcendence in life. Therefore, this pursuit of truthfulness would be developed based on belief in the absolute truth and on doubt about everything in reality based on that belief. Furthermore, nihilism comes from the truthfulness of doubting everything in reality for the sake of the final truth, of eventually exposing that truth itself was a lie. As the devaluation of the highest values, nihilism is an experience of meaninglessness and vainness in life. Previous studies have dealt with the relation between nihilism and truthfulness mainly focusing on the issues of 'the advent of nihilism' and 'exposure to morality's falsehood by truthfulness'. However, in this thesis, I attempt to clarify the context of the 'formation of truthfulness' in more detail and consequently to argue that truthfulness is related not only to 'the advent of nihilism' but also to 'overcoming of nihilism'. This attempt related to 'overcoming of nihilism' says that people must push the logic of truthfulness to the extreme. In the end, a person who, with a highly suspicious glance, doubts everything in the conviction for final truth has an 'experience of tremble and fear', in which his existence collapses. This is an extreme situation: the collapse of the moral foundation upon which human life depends, the entire human life's becoming meaningless, and the deprivation of the value of entire life. Overcoming nihilism is possible when a human, who faces the reality of life honestly without deceiving himself, finally overcomes himself in the face of this greatest crisis in life. This point is what this thesis aims at revealing. By overcoming the greatest ordeal in life, the human would reach an absolute affirmation of life. Consequently, nihilism is overcome when people dispel their falsity by strictly pursuing truthfulness. In addition, this thesis insists that this moment when people overcome their falsity at the extreme of meaninglessness is the moment of creating the new truth. The truth created from conquering the pain from honestly confronting the reality of life is life-affirming truth. Based on this truth, a man tries to overcome himself by stripping away the falsehoods of life. Nietzsche says that man must pursue his truthfulness, which is based on life-affirming truth, even after he has overcome his falsehood. In summary, this thesis intends to reveal that truthfulness, which has not received sufficient attention, plays an essential role from the advent of nihilism to its overcoming. Truthfulness should be developed faithfully from the inability to endure the reality of life up to the affirmation of life. The self-overcoming of nihilism would be possible by this development of truthfulness. Finally, this thesis attempts to show that the overcoming of nihilism is also related to the truth by clarifying the logical structure of truthfulness. Thus, I claim that 'truth and truthfulness' should be considered as a central theme of nihilism from its advent to its development, and to its overcoming.
