Formation flying satellites change the size and shape of the flight during operation to achieve its mission objectives. When the relative distance is close enough or the position uncertainty is large, collision probability and avoidance analysis are essential for the operational stability of the satellite. The purpose of this study is to analyze the probability of nonlinear collision optimal collision avoidance, and optimal return trajectory for the formation flying satellites. Formation flying satellites have a long encounter time because their relative speed is less than 1 km/s. Therefore, a nonlinear collision probability analysis is conducted according to the increasing position uncertainty. The collision probability analysis is derived by converting the three- dimensional Gaussian probability density function into a line integral. The collision probability analysis method is verified through Monte Carlo simulation. Collision probability analysis is performed using the satellite specifications of the formation flying missions SNIPE and CANYVAL-C. Through the analysis, the reliability of the collision probability is secured 1) by comparing the relative distance and the size of the position uncertainty of each axis and 2) by monitoring the point where the collision probability is small due to the large location uncertainty. Because of the thrust limit, the collision avoidance and trajectory recovery are designed in consideration of both the maximum operational stability and the minimum thrust. Collision avoidance is performed by finding the optimal thrust direction that maximizes the relative distance at the predicted collision point using fixed thrust. The position of the predicted collision point according to the thrust is analytically expressed and optimized with the Pontryagin’s minimum principle. In this study, optimal collision avoidance results of SNIPE and CANYVAL-C at the maximum collision probability point are presented. After collision avoidance, trajectory recovery is performed for formation flying operation. Design two impulses that minimize the amount of thrust to recover track within a specified time. Based on the solution of the Lambert problem, the optimal trajectory is verified by confirming that the primer vector satisfies the necessary condition of the primer vector theory. The optimal trajectory for recovery after indirect collision avoidance of the SNIPE mission is presented. In this study, linear and nonlinear collision probability are analyzed by propagating the position uncertainty of the actual formation flying mission. The maximum linear collision probability for SNIPE missions is 0.099% and the nonlinear collision probability is 0.00098%. Since the linear collision probability does not take the relative velocity direction into account, the collision probability has been calculated significantly even if the distance in the relative velocity direction is large enough. Therefore, nonlinear collision probability analysis is required for formation flying mission missions. The maximum nonlinear collision probability in CANYVAL-C mission rendezvous mode is 7.85 ∗ 10% and 0.0634% in inertial alignment hold mode. Based on this, a collision probability analysis algorithm is developed that can be applied to real formation flying mission missions. Collision avoidance trajectory is designed to maximize the distance at the expected point of impact using the fixed thrust of the nano-satellite mission. Using thrust constraints of SNIPE and CANYVAL-C missions, we find the direction of optimal thrust by maximizing the relative distance at the time of maximum collision expected. The optimal control direction is the relative position direction if the point of control is less than the half-orbit cycle, and the relative velocity direction if further away. Using the specifications of the nano-satellite mission, optimal recovery trajectory is designed to return within a specified period. Optimal magnitude, direction, and timing of thrust has found that can return to formation within 50% of the chief satellite orbital cycle of the SNIPE mission. In this study, collision avoidance, recovery trajectory is designed to secure mission operational stability when there is thrust restriction on formation flying mission. In this study, the analysis is performed by reflecting the actual mission requirements and constraints of the formation flying mission. For nano-satellite formation flying mission SNIPE, CANYVAL-C missions scheduled for operation from 2021 to 2022, collision probability and avoidance, recovery is analyzed considering mission constraints, size, weight, mission mode and magnitude of thrust. Therefore, it will be applicable to ground-based collision probability analysis, collision avoidance, and trajectory recovery analysis of real nano-satellites mission. If the collision probability is analyzed in consideration of the shape of the satellite in the collision probability analysis, a more detailed collision probability analysis will be possible. When the collision avoidance and trajectory recovery is optimized in consideration of the position uncertainty of the satellite, it can be applied more stably to the actual mission.
