Pterocarpa는 sect. 7 sect.

A systematic study based on type specimens and original descriptions was conducted for 19 taxa of Korean gen. Clematis L. (Ranunculaceae), which have been inconclusive to date. In addition, comprehensive morphological, anatomical, palynological, cladistic, and molecular studies were carried. The major characters and limits of the variation in each taxon were identified on basis of these analyses. Furthermore, the variations in major characters and their evolution were reassessed, current classification systems re-evaluated, and relationships among taxonomic groups elucidated. Major classification included characters, such as habit, growth type of stem, trichome of node and internode, petiole and tendril-like petiolule, division of leafs, margin of leaflets, papillae of leaf abaxial surface, leaf texture, inflorescence type, presence of bract, direction of flowering, sexuality, trichome and caruncles on sepals, texture of sepals, presence of staminodes, filament trichome, anther trichome, style trichome color, achene trichome, persistent style length, and achene surface structure. As anatomical characters, for some taxa within gen. Clematis, petioles appeared to have distinguishable features, such as cross-section shape, groove of upper surface, and wings of petioles. However, the number of vascular bundles, size of phloem fiber cap, and interfascicular sclerenchyma of petioles were useful characters for classifying all of the treated taxon. In addition, characters, such as cross-section shape, exocarp, mesocarp, endocarp, and seed coat of achenes were useful for distinguishing taxa in the sections. Palynological characters such as shape, size and spinules of pollen were restricted to classify some of the treated taxa, and to elucidate their relationship. Cladistics analysis of the evolutionary trends of the characters showed that the habit evolved from woody to herbaceous, leaf margin from serrate to entire, flowers from bisexual to polygamous, and staminode from absent to present. However, characters, such as the shape of the petiole and trichome of the peduncle, showed a trend toward retro-evolution in some taxa, such as C. brachyura and C. tubulosa. The results of the molecular and cladistics studies did not support the existing classification system of gen. Clematis (Wang and Li, 2005). Sect. Pterocarpa was suitable for combination with sect. Flammula. The identity and distribution of the Korean endemic plants, C. taeguensis and C. fusca var. flabellata, were confirmed. The taxonomic treatment of independent species was supported by molecular studies, including morphological characters. C. mandshurica, known as a variety of C. terniflora, is an independent species, and C. brachyura var. hexapetala has been taxonomically treated as a synonym of C. brachyura. In addition, C. heraclefolia, mentioned in domestic and foreign flora and literature as C. tubulosa, is not distributed in Korea, and the domestic population was confirmed as C. urticifolia, a plant native to Korea. Furthermore, C. takedana is not distributed in Korea. The domestic population of C. takedana shows a morphological difference from Japanese one; therefore, in-depth research on the taxonomic identity of the domestic population is necessary. Based on the result, the treated 19 taxa of Korean gen. Clematis L. (Ranunculaceae) were recognized and categorized as 1 genus, 7 sections, 16 species, and 3 varieties. In addition, their descriptions, figures, and new keys were prepared.
