The Effects of Cogmed Working Memory Training on Improving Working Memory and Solving Underachievement of Gifted Elementary School Students원문보기

The purpose of this study was to improve working memory and to intervene with underachievement of gifted elementary school students in South Korea by applying Cogmed Working Memory Training(CWMT), a computer-based working memory training. The following set of contents were selected for research to be carried out in order to suggest a plan to intervene with underachievement. First, the effects of CWMT on the improvement of working memory of underachieving gifted elementary school students were investigated. Second, the differences in the improvement of working memory between the two different coaching methods of CWMT were investigated. Third, the effects of CWMT on solving underachievement of the gifted were investigated. First of all, the research was conducted on the 11 applicants who were gifted students with an IQ score of 120 or higher (Gagné, 1998) out of 84 fifth graders of A elementary school in Seoul for the purpose of exploring the intervention effect of CWMT on the underachievement of gifted elementary school students. In this study, ‘the underachieving gifted’ was defined and identified as 'learners who showed a level of 8-9 stanine in the IQ result, and whose school performances were 3 stanine or more lower than the IQ result' based on the definition of Supplee(1990). To improve working memory of gifted elementary school students, the Korean version of CWMT was used and CWMT was conducted to trainees using a desktop computer at their home for 25 sessions (5 times a week) in total. The effectiveness of training was explored by conducting working memory test and academic achievement tests. before and after the training participation. Through data analysis, the following results were obtained. First, CWMT was found to be effective in improving working memory not only of students with ADHD or learning disabilities whose working memory were low, but also of gifted elementary school students. Second, both the individual coaching method and the group coaching method were found to be effective in improving working memory of underachieving gifted students using CWMT, and especially the latter was more effective in encouraging the students to participate in training with joy and work hard until the end of the training. Third, it was found that underachieving gifted students had lower working memory than achieving gifted students, suggesting that one of the causes of underachievement was related to working memory. Therefore, CWMT could be used as an effective program to intervene with underachievement of gifted students since working memory and academic performance of underachieving students were improved through the training. However, long-term observation is required to observe the effect of CWMT as there were some cases where academic achievement ability of the students declined even though their working memory had been improved. In addition, it was also suggested that effective coaching and counseling strategies are needed to improve working memory during the training process, while at the same time being only affected by positive external factors, not by negative external factors. Moreover, it could be presumed that there was no significant difference in the intervention effect of underachievement of the two coaching methods, individual coaching and group coaching, but advantages of the group coaching method were found such as meaningful encouragement and support from peers, and group compensation as motivation through providing underachieving gifted students with the experience of achievement.
