Various sterilizing apparatus and chemicals have been used for disinfecting living spaces after the outbreak of COVID-19 in South Korea. Particularly, mechanical sprayer-type sterilizers, which spray disinfectant in the form of mist in the air for the easiness of use, have been commonly used in multiuse facilities such as schools and public institutions. Although the spraying method that sprays disinfectant in a space is easy and convenient, it has a disadvantage of the effectiveness varies highly depending on the concentration of disinfectant, the duration of spraying, and the flow of air. This study was conducted to evaluate the disinfection effectiveness of hypochlorous acid water(HOCl) that have been used most commonly to disinfect multiuse facilities in South Korea. The disinfection effectiveness was tested complying with the “Disinfectant Effectiveness Test Guidelines”, the Bulletin No. 2018-16 of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, targeting Salmonella typhimurium and avian influenza virus. The disinfection effectiveness of HOCl was confirmed by the suspension test method, and the disinfection effectiveness when it is sprayed in the air was evaluated according to the carrier test correspondingly to “Determination of Effective Dilution Rate of Gas-type Disinfectant such as Fumigation”. HOCl solution was sprayed using a 150㎛ nozzle in a closed space(120cm×80cm×232cm). The time length of disinfectant spray was set as 1 and 3 minutes according to the results of water sensitive card reaction test. It was reacted with pathogens for 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 30 minutes and neutralized. The results of this test showed that, when HOCl solution was sprayed in the common space, the effectiveness accepted by the “Disinfectant Effectiveness Test Guidelines”, the Bulletin No. 2018-16 of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, was not found. Suspension test results of HOCl to determine the effect of the drug Under hard water conditions, both bacteria and viruses had a bactericidal effect that exceeded the accreditation standards of the Quarantine Headquarters, but under organic conditions, the standards were not met. The above results suggested that spraying HOCl solution for disinfecting a space in the common living environment would have a substantial control effect(99.9% reduction). However, further studies are needed for commercializing it because the disinfection effectiveness can vary depending on the usage environment(e.g., time length of spray, contact duration, and the flow of air).
