The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of interest in appearance, self-esteem, school life adjustment, and family health on the appearance satisfaction of higher graders in elementary school and identify differences in the influence of each factor on appearance satisfaction depending on gender. The research questions are as follows. First, what are the levels of variables related to appearance satisfaction and appearance satisfaction of higher graders in elementary school, and what is the relationship between them? Second, do personal variables(interest in appearance, self-esteem) and environmental variables(family health, school life adjustment) have a significant effect on the appearance satisfaction of higher graders in elementary school? Third, are there any differences in the variables affecting the appearance satisfaction of higher graders in elementary school depending on gender? In order to verify the above research questions, 543 students in grades 5 and 6 of elementary schools located in Gyeonggi-do participated. As research tools, body esteem scale, interest in appearance scale was adapted to measure appearance satisfaction. self-esteem scale, school life adjustment scale and the family health scale were used. Descriptive statistics analysis, independent sample t-test and correlation using SPSS version 25.0 program for the variables that affect the appearance satisfaction of the senior elementary school through a questionnaire collected to identify the factors affecting the appearance satisfaction of the higher graders in elementary school were conducted. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to find out the difference in the impact of each variable on appearance satisfaction depending on gender. The results of this study are as follows. First, the size of the average of appearance satisfaction and satisfaction-related variables is in the order of family health, self-esteem, school life adjustment, appearance satisfaction and interest in appearance. In correlation with appearance satisfaction, self-esteem, school life adjustqment, and family health had a positive correlation and interest in appearance showed a negative correlation. In the average difference by gender, there was no difference in appearance satisfaction and self-esteem depending on gender, but female students showed higher interest in appearance, family health, and school life adjustment than male students. Second, the variables affecting the appearance satisfaction of higher graders in elementary school were interest in appearance, self-esteem, school life adjustment, and family health. The influences were self-esteem, interest in appearance, family health, and school life adjustment in order. In particular, interest in appearance had a negative effect on appearance satisfaction. Third, depending on the variables, the effects on appearance satisfaction differed by gender. Among the variables, self-esteem and appearance satisfaction affected both male and female students. On the other hand, in addition to the common two sides, school life adjustment for girls and family health for boys were found to affect their appearance satisfaction. Therefore, this study could present a theory that will help develop and apply programs that increase self-esteem and adjust appropriate interest in appearance, with more emphasis on school life adjustment for girls and on family health for boys.
