Purpose: This study investigates the self-efficacy, social support, and grit of clinical nurses and examines the effect of clinical nurses’ self-efficacy and perceived social support on their grit to provide essential data for developing a program that can promote the grit of clinical nurses.
Purpose: This study investigates the self-efficacy, social support, and grit of clinical nurses and examines the effect of clinical nurses’ self-efficacy and perceived social support on their grit to provide essential data for developing a program that can promote the grit of clinical nurses.
Methods: This study is a descriptive research study with 182 nurses, convenient samples from one general tertiary hospital in Seoul. The data was collected from April 9 to April 21, 2021 and then analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 26.0 program for the mean and standard deviation, frequency and percentage, t-test, one-way ANOVA, post-hoc test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis.
Results: The average self-efficacy of the clinical nurses was 3.71±0.44. The highest was the self-efficacy of the implementation stage (3.85±0.46), followed by the assessment stage (3.71±0.49), the evaluation stage (3.64±0.58), and the diagnosis and planning stage (3.59±0.54). The nurses' self-efficacy showed significant differences according to position (F=2.755, p=0.044), pay satisfaction (F=4.808, p=0.009), and the number of night shift hours (F=3.435, p=0.034). The Perceived social support that the nurses had been given was measured by dividing into the support from “family and friends” and “supervisors and coworkers.” The average social support from “family and friends” was 4.42±0.56. Emotional support showed the highest level (4.46±0.53), followed by financial support (4.45±0.65), informational support (4.37±0.66), and evaluative support (4.39±0.56). The social support from “family and friends” showed significant differences according to age (F=7.085, p=0.001), marital status (t=-2.292, p=0.023), dependents (t=2.434, p=0.016), educational background (t=-2.755, p=0.006), job title (F=2.865, p=0.038), nursing experience (F=3.417, p=0.019), desired department (F=3.640, p=0.028), monthly payroll (F=4.375, p=0.005) and pay satisfaction (F=3.738, p=0.026). The average social support that the nurses were given from “supervisors and coworkers” was 3.50±0.76. The highest was informational support (3.60±0.80), followed by evaluative support (3.54±0.74), emotional support (3.43±0.78), and financial support (3.29±0.93). The social support from “supervisors and coworkers” showed significant differences according to department (F=4.906, p=0.001) and pay satisfaction (F=7.707, p=0.001). The average grit of the clinical nurses was 2.91±0.43. Among the sub-areas, “passion to become a professional nurse” (3.09±0.41) was the highest, followed by “patient-oriented intrinsic motivation” (3.05±0.56) and “persistence to achieve long-term goals” (2.62±0.57). The grit of the nurses showed significant differences according to age (F=14.514, p=0.000), marital status (t=-2.891, p=0.004), dependents (t=3.000, p=0.003), educational background (t=-5.810, p=0.000), reason for choosing to become a nurse (F=4.114, p=0.003), position (F=7.248, p=0.000), career experience (F=5.632, p=0.001), and pay satisfaction (F=5.630, p=0.004). The grit of the research subjects showed significant positive correlation with self-efficacy (r=.318, p=0.000), social support from “family and friends” (r=.236, p=0.001)), and social support from “supervisors and coworkers” (r=.349, p=0.000). The factors affecting the grit of the clinical nurses included self-efficacy (β=0.222, p=0.002) and perceived social support from “supervisors and coworkers” ( β=0.269, p=0.000), and the explanatory power of the variables was 19.4% (F=14.255, p=0.000).
Conclusion: Increasing nurses' self-efficacy and providing social support in the workplace is essential to improve nurses' grit. The study provided basic data for developing strategies and programs to increase the grit of clinical nurses.
