The objective of this study was to examine the pattern of teacher-child interaction presented in the course of reading the words of a fantasy picture book, and then look into the difference in teacher’s interaction and young children’s response according to whether there were words or not in the fantasy picture book.
For this, study questions were established as follows:
1. ‘What is teacher-child interaction in the reading of a fantasy picture book?’
1-1, ‘What is the pattern of teacher’s interaction presented in the course of reading a fantasy picture book to children?’
1-2. ‘What is young children’s response to the reading of a fantasy picture book?’
2. ‘Is there any difference in teacher-child interaction according to whether there are words or not in the fantasy picture book?’
2-1. ‘Is there any difference in teacher’s interaction according to whether there are words or not in the fantasy picture book?
2-2. ‘Is there any difference in young children’s response according to whether there are words or not in the fantasy picture book?
The participants in this study were 15 five-year-old children who were attending at L National-Public Child-care Center in M City and a class teacher of six-year experience in early childhood education. The class teacher divided 15 children into three groups and then carried out the activities of reading four fantasy picture books to the three groups of children four times respectively (total 12 times) for a period of four weeks. In order to examine the difference of teacher-child interaction presented in the reading of fantasy picture books to children according to whether there are words or not, the class teacher read two fantasy picture books with words and another two fantasy picture books without words to children by turns. The four fantasy picture books were selected by the advice of a professor specialized in the department of early childhood education and a class teacher in charge of a class of 5-year-old children. A preliminary study was conducted with five 5-year-old children for a period of 5 days and children were randomly sampled from a class of 15 children at O Child-care Center in G City.
In order to analyze the pattern of teacher-child interaction presented in the course of reading fantasy picture books to children, the author used teacher's teaching, divergent and passive interaction categories established by Collins (2005) for teacher interaction. And in order to examine young children’s response, the author used the analytic categories of linguistic and behavioral responses established by Stephanie and Nancy (1999). The category of linguistic response includes responses to the components of picture books and literary works, whereas the category of behavioral response comprises all the behavioral responses to words, pictures and events.
The total amount of time to read picture books was 143 minutes and 18 seconds. And in order to collect data, teacher’s activities of reading picture books to children were recorded. Data were collected through the transcripts of recorded files on which the discourses of teacher and children were recorded, and field notes and interview results with which behavioral responses could be found out. Teacher’s interaction and young children’s response, presented in the reading of picture books, were classified in accordance with the categories of teacher’s interaction and young children’s response. And in order to examine the categorical difference in the pattern of interaction, frequency and percentage were calculated.
Study findings are as follows:
First, regarding the pattern of interaction presented in teacher’s reading of fantasy picture books to children, the teaching interaction was most frequent, and it was followed by passive interaction and divergent interaction in a diminishing order. Regarding young children’s response to fantasy picture books, linguistic response was frequent but behavioral response was infrequent.
Second, regarding teacher’s interaction according to whether there were words or not in the fantasy picture book, teaching interaction was most frequent when there were words, and it was followed by passive interaction and divergent interaction in a diminishing order. When there were no words, on the other hand, passive interaction was most frequent and it was followed by divergent interaction and teaching interaction in a diminishing order. Regarding young children’s response according to whether there were words or not in the fantasy picture book, linguistic response was most frequent and behavioral response was infrequent regardless of words. Regarding young children’s linguistic response according to the sub-variables of words, their ‘linguistic response to the component of picture books was frequent, regardless of words. But their ‘linguistic response to literary works’ of picture books was infrequent, regardless of words.
In conclusion, teacher’s reading interaction and young children’s linguistic response to fantasy picture books were different by the presence or absence of words. This study examined the difference in the pattern of teacher’s interaction and young children’s response, when they were reading fantasy picture books with or without words. Study findings seem to suggest that when one uses a fantasy picture book in the scene of early childhood education, he or she must take its words into consideration, since the word of a fantasy picture book is a very important element for an effective early childhood education. This study seems to be significant in that it provided a variety of picture books with or without words to young children, thus finding out practical examples to increase the diversity of teacher’s interaction and young children’s response.
